I own what was at the time, their nicest 60" Plasma. 8yrs later, it is STILL going strong! I have it hung up in my Lounge/Bar.

I also have a newer 55" in my sons bedroom which he watches DirecTV and plays PS4 on it daily. And I'm a diehard fan of their Android phones. Also own a Washer & Dryer set form LG as well.
Yeah I'm leaning towards the LG, bigger, same price and similar specs. I doubt my eyes could tell the difference between the two.

My old 13+ year old Samsung plasma is still going strong also. Will probably retire it when I get the new one. Move current 55" LG to bedroom where the plasma currently resides. It has a little ghosting on dark scenes but still works fine.

Damnit! The 82" LG is $1600.... but I think I'd rather go with the 86" for $400 more.

If i may be so bold.... Can I suggest you consider the step-up model from Samsung for another ~$500? The reason i suggest at least considering stretching the budget is to get into a display with a direct-view LED backlight the Q70 has instead of an edge-lit design the Q60 has. While edge-lit performance is vastly improved over the last few years, a big panel size like an 82" really pushes the limit. A direct-view backlight will provide better uniformity. Additionally, the Q60 lacks local dimming where the Q70 has this significant feature. In summation the Q70 has a vastly-superior backlight system over the Q60. If $2k was a hard budget, I'd consider a 75" Q70 instead of the 82" Q60, but viewing distance and other subjective issues would be have to be weighed in.

Thanks that site is pretty sweet! I went to the local Best Buy just to look at TVs. Probably worst setup to look at stuff in bright store all with different crap playing on them, but honestly, they all looked pretty good to me. The only ones that stood out that I could see a clear difference was in the OLED one, sooooooo black! Those are way out of my budget though. Everything else for me was really a toss up.

The TV is basically surrounded by sliding glass doors so it's really never pitch dark in that room, not like a dedicated home theater or anything. So my biggest want is for it to be BIG to fill the huge wall.

My friend has this one however when I compared it to others on rtings.com seemed to be lacking in specs.

Mainly a really low contrast ratio of 799 : 1

Am I OCD or what I made this from measurements of the 85" LG and an 82" Samsung. I guess because its a horizontal measurement end up being not that much of a foot print on the wall. Damn.... probably why I only buy a new TV every 7 years or so too much to think about even though when it's all said and done I'm sure I will be fine with any TV I get.

Green is 82" blue is 86"

No it's dead right. As screen size grows it's a decreasing economy of scale. The pixel count rises sharply but the actual screen footprint gets relatively smaller. It's lose/lose.

Re. Samsung, I just will not touch them. I bought a TV and a fridge and both were junk within weeks of the warranty expiring with known defects and the told me to go suck a bag of dicks. Fuck samsung, will never touch anything again.
