Does anyone else have a loud in tank fuel pump?
I took Teagueamx's advice and have kept the gas tank full, but the loud humming sound coming from behind the seat is still loud. It is especially annoying at idle or low speeds. I was hoping keeping the tank full would solve this, but it hasn't. Is anyone else experiencing the same humming sound coming from the rear of the car?

I hear it with the top down. I play loud music and it does drown it out, but sometimes it's nice to hear the exhaust note minus the humming of the fuel pump. I don't remember hearing it when I first got the car. I am trying to gauge whether this is inherent in this car or should I bring it in to the dealer.

I'm apologize Roadstergal, I should have been clearer. At the worst, sometimes you might hear a very slight hum but it should not be in annoying in any way.
You've done all you can do. Take it to the dealer. They need to replace it.

No need to apologize. I understood what you were saying. I was trying to see if I am the only one hearing this constant hum. I know there have been many posters complaining about the HPFP, but no one is complaining about the noise coming from behind the seat.

I have the hum, too. It seems to come and go. I talked to the SA at the dealer and he tells me that BMW NA's policy is that in order to have the in-tank pump replaced under warranty, the diagnostics must show a code (same basic policy applies to the HPFP). From what I've heard, the HPFP can really start to act up (long cranks) before the car throws a code. Not sure about the in-tank pump.

Mine is too loud no matter if I have a full tank or 1/4 tank.

May be the difference in warranty policy between BMW Netherlands and BMW North America. Anyone have their in-tank pump replaced in the USA without a code being thrown?

He indicated that BMW had to program new codes in the ecu to make sure the mechanics didn't automatically replace the HPFP. He stated, that sometimes the in-tank fuel failed but they automatically replaced the HPFP, and then had to go back and replace the in-tank fuel pump.

I had the rear fp replaced after hearing a hum. I had no error codes and the tech diagnosed and replaced the rear and told me that the rear was definitely failing.

Mine is going in on Monday to address this problem. The humming is loud enough that it is taking away the driving pleasure. It doesn't get any quieter no matter how much gas is in the tank.

2000 miles on our 2009 and the rear in tank fuel pump is noisy internittantly. I'm curious how the rest of you make out with replacement when there's no error code.
There's a large pattern of failure of this pump based on all the concerns I've seen across forums. Then there's the HPFP pumps on the turbos. Looks like BMW has a big problem with their supplier on these. |

Dunno if this helps but on another forum, one member says that the dealer showed him a bulletin from BMW that says... "not to change the fuel pumps as the fault is in the ECU running the pump at idle and that a new software patch would be available by the end of the month."

I don't think this has anything to do with the low pressure fuel pump noise. This sounds more like a safety mechanism controlled by the ECU to shutdown the pump isn't working properly. |

I haven't experienced this issue (yet) and am thoroughly enjoying my ride. I am curious though if this high pressure pump issue applies to all 09'+ Z4's?
I'm hearing squat, regardless of the amount of fuel in my tank and regardless of weather conditions etc. I'm driving an '11 s3.0i 6MT. Dumb question, but does my model even have this HPFP to begin with? Sorry if that's been covered somewhere, but a search didn't turn anything up. Regards Dave

This thread is in regards to the low pressure fuel pump that is in your gas tank. I have a 2010 that was built in October and I had a faulty low pressure fuel pump that I recently had replaced. I don't know if this issue has been resolved in the 2011's, though I hardly think so as the 2011's were in production only months after the 2010's. I haven't heard of a 2011 with this problem yet. I noticed the humming after seven months of ownership.
The 30i's do not have a high pressure fuel pump.

I got the car back from the dealership and they confirmed it is the low pressure fuel pump that is going faulty. Parts are on order and scheduled to arrive Friday morning. My service advisor claimed she could not hear anything. I can't believe she could not hear what I was hearing coming from the rear. I asked her to step outside and listen near the rear wheels and still nothing. She ended up getting the shop foreman who confirmed the noise. He then still wanted to compare it to the demonstrator on the lot just to make sure. Demonstrator had no humming at idle.
