Great companies to work for?

I know this is a car forum, not a job networking site, but I have came across so much great information from users on the off-topic section so wanted to post this here.

I've been working for the same company (Medtronic) for about 8.5 years and it has been an amazing place to be. From the leadership, to culture, to pay and benefits, I cannot complain. I'm at a point though where I'd like to explore what working for another company could look like.

What are some great large and middle-size companies that people recommend working for?

I'm open to many industries and like the idea of something completely different. I want to be a part of a great environment with cool people.

Thanks!

I've been retired since '94, so my input is fairly ancient. However, Levi Strauss was a terrific place to work from the early 70s through the mid-90s, and it's entirely possible that it still is. No idea how you feel about living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I worked for AAA, Hitachi America, Allianz Global Investors, Delta Dental, Bank of America, and a number of smaller outfits, mostly doing contract work for a few months to a few years at each one. They were fine in their own ways; none were remotely unpleasant places to work. All paid very well, and were generally well-managed. If their cultures haven't changed significantly, they're probably still worth taking a look at.

Levis was the one that worked hardest at standing out in the way you're describing, and it did so very successfully. It was frequently on the short list of best companies to work for. I haven't seen one of those lists in a long time, though, and cool is defined very differently today.

There is no way I would relocate at this point of my life so need a company that allows remote or local to Twin Cities, MN. My sister was at Allianz for a few years and she had good things to say about them. Interesting that you mention doing contract work; i have only ever had full time roles and haven't considered doing contracts. I have many friends that do that and enjoy being able to get out if they land somewhere that isn't a good fit.

I'm confused... if your current company is so amazing why would you want to change just for the sake of change?

Personally I have not worked for any large companies other than Clear Channel and that was while I was in college. Pay was shit, but my department was part of the promotion guys who would go out to concerts and stuff so it was fun for a while. Other than that I've only worked for smaller family owned companies and now work for myself.

I can't give input to that as I work for a medium sized family owned business that I would prefer to work for a smaller family owned business. Just my nickel.

Fair question. Two things to explain why:

1. Long story but the area I am in is being divested from the main company. It will be sold off to another company/investor, or become a stand-alone operating unit. Either way I won't be an employee of my company for much longer and I am looking to see what else is out there with the current uncertainty.

2. I have had great experiences in the past changing from one industry to something completely different. I feel it helps build more diverse experience and it can be exciting.

I don't know what you do nor do I work there, but I've always heard Costco was a top employer in all roles and the GMs make a lot of $$.

What do you do for Medtronic? It’s a good industry to work in. We share a lot of the same clients I’m sure.

I’m not going to give you a hint of my degree or experience but where shall I look for a job? I hear Southwest is hiring, go hire in as a pilot.

What is your pay expectation?

Management or individual contributor?

What are your educational credentials?

What is your current job title?

What other requirements do you have (in addition to no relocation)?

My wife works for Medtronic as well, for the last 10 or so years. If your division is being sold of, why not look for a move within the company? It is, as you say, a great company to work for. If you want help trying to see what is availble for a lateral move for a different division or something else within the company I can help you out. She works in the HR department for global ops IIRC so she has all the info. Let me know

Is medtronic the pill cam company?

I've worked IT for the last 15 years at a large hospital in south florida. I've been treated very well for the last 15 years. Good pay, working conditions, location. But I'm always looking for something better. Still havent found it. Kinda scared to actually give up what I have. You never know, It might be worse.
