Nissan GT-R review (pro pics)

My first car was a 3000GT. My second was a 350Z. So it stands to reason that I should love the GT-R, since it’s sort of a combination of those cars.

Alas, something is missing. The transmission isn’t very nice. The engine still sounds like a VQ inside, even though it isn’t. And wow is it cheap. I’m rooting for the car, I want to love it because of Fast and Furious and Grand Turismo, maybe the next one…

I've just never warmed to these, plenty fast but it's so, so big in person.

And yet so small inside - why make the car so big and yet so useless?

Don’t have much to say but, the 2017 refresh was pretty major mostly interior wise and secondly exterior wise. Hard to compare the GTR to the 3000Gt and especially the 350Z. Since we are on a BMW forum, comparing a 2017 M4 and a 2017 GTR, the GTR offers superior performance. It feels bigger (it is). The interiors are pretty evenly matched (honestly the GTR seats have better styling and detail IMO). But the big kicker is, price. Sold my 2017 GTR for 114k. And you can get a comparable example of an M4 for about half that, let’s say 65k. So bang for buck id have to go with M4. Rareness goes to GTR hands down. Rarely see them. They made I think 1500 of my year which was 2017.

Honestly the f80 M4 ticks a LOT of boxes, including not looking shite. Shame there's no sound so to speak.

M4 styling is awesome. But it does lean towards the basic side of the spectrum imo compared to the GTR which is styled like nothing else and is very unique. One of the reason I had 3 of them.

Oh I forgot to mention sound! Both cars I’d rate like a 7.5-8 in that dept. Both sound good but nothing amazing. Depends on exhaust setup of course.

I remember when these cars came out, a rich friend of mine got one and did a few mods to it. Even with 600 hp they were monsters, but the drive just never did it for me, and being a small guy neither did the size.

YOu'd rate a F80 M4 7/10 for sound? I'd give it a 3. At best.

Lol that’s rough. It’s not that bad. Idk. I have FI downpipes, single mid, Eisenman exhaust and Pure Turbos. The turbo whistle is really nice. This exhaust isn’t raspy. I”m pretty happy with it

Yeah, agreed, the sound is just terrible. I'm surprised when anyone likes it at all, but I guess they're either seeing through their BMW-colored glasses, or they just don't know any better.

The interior looks so cheap given the cost of the car. Even on the new ones...

Guys, I know this is a bimmer forum, but this car shits on M4’s for the most part lol and I own an M4 (as of recent). The M4 is great but we are comparing a rare $90k-$100k+ sports car with a $50k-$70k car that is produced in the thousandssss, iMHO. I owned my last GTR for almost 3 years and was my 3rd car so wanted to move to something else and also use some funds for an investment. Anyways. Few pics. To each their own of course!

It’s way faster than an M4 of the times, but then again, they are really competitors.

I think that if you love Japanese coupes and you want the best, this one is still it. The new NSX never really did it for me.

No disrespect but all I see in that interior is cheap plastic and low quality leather in a $130k car. Yes I’m sure it’s fast as hell, but I’m not a turbo guy so the GTR does nothing for me. Plenty of fast cars out there, not many with a soul.

Not the best pic. It’s got some nice carbon bits and the seats are a major upgrade from the m4 comp seats imo.

Curious if you’ve had much experience driving one? Traction control off the GTR is a beast. Easily gets sideways and can put up to 80% power to the rear. But you are correct in that they spent most of the cost on R&D, power train etc. Cars are extremely reliable

Ding ding ding!!! When I matched the AA EQ mud with my full Akro, it was ok at best. The car just sounds like shit no matter what. Unfortunately

my garage back in the day :

My GTR was FBO e85. I bought one for the reasons mentioned as i was 27 at the time. 0-60, lap times, the badge and history. I got an FRS as a daily and found myself wanting to grab the keys to that more than the GTR. It just dances through tight stuff easier while the gtr you kind of have to get it settled, wait for apex, then get on boost once you're mostly straight. It is an interesting car if you've never driven one, you can feel the power shuffling around all four wheels pulling you out of corners.

Then i test drove a Gen V Viper and put it up for sale. After that test drive i got back into my GTR and it felt like i was driving a fast minivan.

There is really minimal plastic in the 2017+ GTR interior. Although my perspective is coming from my 2018 with the optional upgraded leather wrapped dash and I think it has more leather on the door panels than standard.

I can say for sure that it might not photograph the best but in person its a nice quality feeling and very timeless interior due to not having any cheesy tech. By far the least of the concerns if you want to bash the 17+ GTR. I would put it next to a F80 interior. The only thing that feels cheap and flimsy in my GT-R, IMHO, is the overhead console with the dome light and sunglasses holder.

But this review is looking at a DBA, which is basically the same as the 2008 inside. That is a long time ago and yes one of the biggest eyesore interiors of all time. It had me steer clear of the car for nearly 10 years, despite being a Nissan tuner. I would have never owned one if they didn't take a massive stride from there.

The GT-R was definitely over priced though, especially in the last several years of production. My 2018 had a MSRP of about $115,000 if I recall correctly. I got it with 6000 miles on it for $89,500. In my opinion, that is what it should have MSRP at. Maybe a little more, but certainly under 100.

Note that the 17+ transmission also received some refinement in the valve bodies and TCM. It is still quirky and jerky, but its tolerable. Except the 2-1 downshift will break your ribs on the steering wheel if you aren't ready for it

There is so much to talk about with the GT-R. These days, its really tough to place it. If not for the absolutely insane aftermarket development that went into the platform, its hard to say if there is anything left that is genuinely better about it than other cars. I struggle to really think of any good reason to buy one any more.. I know that as of right now, if I didnt already own one, the car would not be on my radar.

^ I think the rarity is a big one. And performance FBO e85. Reliability is insanely good. My buddy launched his over 200x and raced it nearly every wknd and only did oil changes.

And awd launches and grip in corners was obviously awesome
