Code listings?

Got my Carly yesterday, now as I learn more about my Z4, where do I find a list of all the trouble codes...
I am sure this tool will prove enlightening, and useful.

I don’t think you’ll find all encompassing list..with some 30+ ECUs on board..a few unique or different to other E90 models there are a few that are very E89 specific…afaik no one ever compiled one for the E89 specifically…

Best is to Google the codes as they come up..

Carly is not always the best on giving clear indication on codes..or it wasn’t ..maybe it’s better now..

I use Protool. So far it's hands down superior to Carly

What Carly said

My carly says my battery health is very bad! Strange, as the car starts fine, no issues. I know the previous owner had left it sit for an extended period of time, but said it was on a trickle charger. Should I replace it now or let it ride for a while?
I am leaning towards replacement now, as I do not want it to cause any other issues with the car.

Its essentially imperative that you replace the battery with a decent AGM 70ah or 80ah battery and make sure its registered / coded as required..

With 30+ ECUs on board the E89..many of which don't know how to /expect to cope with a poor battery all sorts of both temporary and permanent faults can manifest themselves..hope that's clear enough?

B21 is correct. I replaced the battery in my Z4 last spring with this one which you should be able to find in FL.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/EverStart...0-CCA/40685088

I used BimmerCode/BimmerLink to code the battery, but oddly enough the old battery didn't show up, so either it wasn't coded, or it's an issue with the app. The old battery was a BMW battery but I couldn't find a date code on it. The model number of the battery was last produced in 2013.

While you are replacing the battery I recommend replacing the salmon colored relays too since they are right next to the battery. Genuine BMW part number 12631742690 (12 63 1 742 690). I think they are about $20 each.

OK, Got the new battery installed. Carly says it needs to get to know it and it can take 24 hours. So, is it OK to leave the Carly plugged in, while the car is parked?
Hopefully I can finish the registration when they get along!

Hmmm, seem odd that it takes up to 24 hours, but then I know nothing about Carly. Hope it goes okay for you.

Yea, the Carly app countdown clock kept track, and after that was finished, I could register, and also see the specs on the new battery.
I sent an inquiry to Carly, asking if its OK to leave it plugged in for extended periods, or should I only have it plugged when I am using it?

It is the DME that takes care of the battery health. But it doesn't matter which manufacturer or seller. It's just a matter of being informed of the correct capacity.

My recommendation is a VARTA or EXIDE, 70Ah, AGM technology mandatory!

The registering takes only a couple of seconds to reset an internal statistics in the DME, not more. Just some math stuff done in the background via the DME to take care of start-stop functions (not on E89) and recommendation alerts to replace an outdated battery.

The Carly adapter is only required for as long as you use this tool, no longer. In this case, even your mobile phone must be present with the app as this tool requires WWW access. By the way, the Carly company is based in Munich.

I got the new battery from Walmart, DrumerDude gave the info and it was in stock. Its an 80 AH, and its AGM.
Also got the registration finished and Carly worked!
But I must admit, their customer support is not good! After asking two simple questions, they keep making me complete forms that have nothing to do with the question. Simple emails they do not answer. But I have it now, and will make the best of it.

Unfortunately I can confirm this as well. There are better OBD solutions on the market, that do not require a subscription.

I recommended the Everstart battery as that brand has a good reputation, although Everstart's are manufactured by various companies, including Exide.

The big plus with Everstart is they have a 4 year warranty, so if the battery fails after 3 1/2 years it's replaced for free.
