Acceleration noise
Hello Everyone,
I am looking to upgrade to a 2016 Z4. When I drove it and accelerated the car, you could hear a noise like the turbo engaging. I have owned many turbo BMWs. I have never heard that. Is that normal? It also had a rough idle the dealership is looking into for me. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks, Jodi |

I would describe it as a whistle. It sounds like a turbo engaging. I have never heard of it in a BMW before. It has a lot of power when accelerating, so it's just the noise. It's a Z4 (E89) 28i with s-drive.

Well it could have been modified and that's the cause..it could be a boost leak but then normally you would get an error fault...could be the turbo is on the way out..normally 28i don't really whistle..perplexed..

On 35i when you flash the car with a tune and up the boost you do sometimes hear turbos spooling up. And with a dual cone intake its even more obvious.
Maybe it has a tune on it?

I'm not the best car person. But is there a way I can check that? Would it be obvious? I know what a turbo unit looks like. It totally sounds like it might. But I have never heard it before.
Thanks, Jodi |

Jodi: Just go find another 28i to drive and see if it has the same noise. BTW; if it sounds like turbo whine, it probably is turbo whine. My 35i has had turbo whine since day one. It's part of the deal on these cars!
