Coding Injectors Help
So I’ve had quite a bit of bad luck with this 2011 z4 35i (N54 motor) I bought a few months back. When I got the car, it was misfiring on cylinder one. The auto shop went ahead and replaced all spark plugs, since the coil packs were recently replaced less than 10,000 miles ago and they also replaced only one of the fuel injectors for cylinder one. The car has 67,000 miles on it.
Well, fast forward 400 miles later, it’s misfiring quite bad again, and is very rough on start up. Rather than run the car to figure out which cylinders misfiring I’m going to check all the spark plugs tomorrow, I’m waiting on the 14mm special socket to deliver. After doing a bunch of research, I am finding that you need to replace all injectors on a bank since they are index 12 versus index 9. To get just one fuel injector replaced cost me over $1000. I’d like to do this job myself because it seems decently straightforward. Plus, I’m not happy the shop didn’t replace all three at once. They’re a very well-known reputable BMW shop, I’m surprised they didn’t just do the job right the first time. The question I have for everybody is what tools do you use to reprogram the new injectors?? FCP euro has a great blog about replacing the injectors. I believe a ISTA OBDII scan tool is needed. Any recommendations you all might have would be appreciated. I’m quite depressed that the Autel tool is $500. I’m hoping for a cheaper option if at all possible Once I get the car running well again, I’m gonna walnut blast it as well. It seems like a pretty straightforward job, especially with all the room the engine has on these cars. UPDATE: To my surprise it was cylinder 5 with issues this time… crazy that only 400 miles later yet another injector needs to be replaced. Last edited by BMW764; 11-21-2023 at 02:06 PM.. |

The Android based Bimmergeeks Protool is what I’ve used to code the injectors on both my N20 and N54 powered E89s..very straightforward..a perpetual license for diagnostics and coding is around 150 usd I believed…Black Friday?….
Of course you need an android phone..I’m an Apple user so I bought a ruggedised Chinese unit for 100 usd.. You need either a D/K-Can cable and a USB-OTP adapter or a suitable Wi-Fi OBD connector ..I use both ..MHD do one..I use MHD and xHP as well. Keep the stuff in the car so if a fault happens..which it will on a N54 E89 you can trouble shoot in the field..

Really appreciate the help here! So just to be clear all I need to do is get the pro to master license and also a Bluetooth OBDII adapter, correct?
Fortunately, I have a old android phone laying around. I can definitely definitely use. |

Some cheap ones can read codes but can’t program things..

Need more advise here. OK so I’ve done more research on the injectors. I was thinking about getting some eBay injectors that are index 12 for 100 bucks. However, I’m not willing to risk it not knowing the quality. Honestly I don’t have $2500 just sitting around for five new injectors. So my thought process is this.
Since only one injector was replaced on bank 1 for cylinder one, what if I buy two new injectors so that all three injectors on bank 1 are replaced as index 12. Then, I reuse one of the good injectors from bank 1 (which would be an index 9 injector) and replace cylinder five injector that is having the misfire currently. This way all bank 1 are index 12 and all bank 3 are working index 9. This means I would need to buy three new coupling elements, one for the used injector on cylinder 5 and the two new ones on 2 & 3. Is there anything else I would need to replace on the working used index 9 injector before I put into cylinder 5? |

It’s ok to have index 9 on one bank and index 12 on the other…yiu need a fresh decoupler for each removed / refitted injector ..
You’ll probably need the tip Teflon seal for each one removed too.. The seal will rapidly expand once removed if in good condition..if poor it will need replacing anyway. I’d be very very cautious about unspecified sourced index 12 injectors , the market is flooded with knock off copies from China and also failed oe injectors that people are trying to off load..

I havent really heard of people doing it with n54 injectors, but my friends have had their injectors refurbished/serviced successfully.
For example on Alfa Romeo 2.4L 5cylinder diesel engine.. N54 injectors are similar to some diesel engine injectors, so maybe they can be cleaned and serviced aswell... https://www.n54injectors.com/ For example i found this site offering refurb service and also offers already refurbished injectors aswell for about half the price of the new ones... but if you plan on owning the car for a long time and want it to be reliable.. installing a full st of index 12 is the way to go... and even more so if you plan on tuning it for more power... When i bought mine it luckily already had a full set of index 12 on it installed by the previous owner...I bought mine in spring 2016 and havent had any issues with the injectors in what... almost 8 years... Also one thing to consider is FCPEuro Lifetime warranty Quote:
