Yesterday was a top-down day, so got to try out wind deflector that I installed back in January. Wife and I were both quite pleased with how well it cut down the heavy back draft turbulence.

Not only the hair that girls care.
With top down, she will get more sun spots, more wrinkles after awhile take her for laser+Botox (That will cost you more than a wind defector)

Nebraska, they have the best prices, free shipping and no sales tax unless you are in Nebraska. Ask for Jack.

I just bought the deflector but did not buy replacement silver hoops. Can somebody measure the distance between the bottom of the hoop and where the bottom guide starts........so I can drill the hoop?

Just remove the rear silver cover and you can measeure to the bosses in the plastic retainer located underneath yourself.

I have just installed the BMW OEM wind deflector, which I got for the list price of £317 from BMW Direct on eBay. You don't need to touch the front (black) roll hoop covers at all - I have no idea why the BMW documentation says you need to buy them (and even the official installation instructions say you should remove them, which is unnecessary).
By far the hardest part of the job was removing the silver rear roll hoop covers. The bottom ends came away quite easily, but not the top. In the end I wedged the bottom open and used a large flat bladed screwdriver to push away in the centre of the top, using considerable force to pop them off. The first one flew about ten feet and got scratched on the pavement, so I knew to hold on to the second one. It is a moot point whether you should invest £22 each in replacement pre-drilled roll hoop covers. It would have saved me an hour carefully measuring and drilling the four access holes for the screws that hold the mounting brackets. I had to burr two of them into ovals as my original measurement was about 2mm out, but this is not visible. I quite enjoyed the challenge. The small mesh inserts clipped in quite easily, then the brackets screw on easily and the roll hoop covers pop back on much more easily than they came off. |

I am about to take on this task. Thank you for the pictures. I ordered the pre-drilled covers just to be safe.

Big thanks to this forum and thread. Install was very easy. I didn't use any tools at all in removing the back cover. Knowing where the tabs was a big help. I just pulled at those spots and the cover came off very easily.
Actually the hardest part of the install was trying to figure out which side is Right and Left. I always get confused if L and R are determined when seated in the car or if you are facing the car. For anyone else confused about that, it is when you are seated in the car. So for us in the US, Left is Drivers Side and Right is passengers side. |
