Initially BMW will try the software update on N54 engined cars.

Some say it is more of a band-aid solution to failing pumps.

From Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N54

The good news is that BMW has actually introduced a new design with a new part number. The comment about the low pressure fuel sensor gives a clue why BMW is using a software fix to address some of these problems.

Quote:
In at least the US market, the N54 engine has been characterized by a very large number of High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) failures, leading to many BMW NA vehicle Lemon Law "buy backs" and reduced customer goodwill. On some engines the HPFP was replaced four times within the first few years of service. BMW has instituted a 10-year, 120,000-mile (190,000 km) warranty on the part, but only for 2007, 2008 and 2009 model year vehicles with the N54 engine. Other model years, to include 2009 models, continue to report HPFP failures.[5] As of late 2009, the low pressure fuel sensor has become suspected of causing some premature failures of the HPFP by engine tuners such as AMS and CP-E. BMW has engineered a newer HPFP solution which has seemed to eliminate HPFP issues users were having. The part number is: 13517594943 and it replaces 13517592881. If your dealership is still installing the *881 HPFP then this should be addressed with your SA.

Note that there have unfortunately been several reported failures of the new '943' pumps. I am not sure that anyone knows for certain yet exactly why these failures continue.

My HPFP died last month and the dealer confirmed for me I got the revised part and software update when I picked up my car. They handled it really well and turned it around next day, would have been sooner but they had to have the pump shipped to them overnight.

Update:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N54

Quote:
BMW tried to engineer a newer HPFP solution to eliminate HPFP issues users were having. The first 335/135s came out with 1351 7 537 320 HPFP followed shortly by 1351 7 585 655 HPFP and 2009 model had 1351 7 592 881 HPFP followed by 1351 7 596 123 HPFP. These pumps were updated and replaced again due to the high rate of failure with 1351 7 594 943 HPFP. But these also started to fail and got updated and replaced in May 2010 with a brand new re-manufactured pump 1351 7 613 933 HPFP [8]. On the 26th of October, 2010, BMW announced a recall of vehicles with the pump in question from manufacturing years 2007-2010[9].

I am hearing a whining kind of noise (seems from the engine) . The sound increases with increased rpm and as you let go off the accelerator the sound decreases as the rpm drops. Noise is mostly noticable about 2500 rpm

Sounds more like a flywheel rotating at higher speed when the accelerator is pressed and slowing down when released.

Is it the HPFP issue or something else?

Sounds like the HPFP or the turbo (cannot remember what you drive as I type this), nevertheless I would see the dealer ASP

I am alive after a month + absence from the forum; blame mild depression on having to pay for my wife's HPFP replacement when the damn thing has now been recalled and should have been under warranty = thanks BMWNA for your crappy customer support. For those of you that are new or did not follow the saga: my wife's car has some performance modifications and BMW blamed the HPFP failure at 8000 miles on the FMIC (I know, b.s., but I will spare you all the retelling of the load they tried to shove down my throat).

Well, I have now sent the "lawyer letter." We shall see what happens now that the darn thing has been recalled. The car is great and we still love it; as for BMW, not so much.

Nice to have you back! I'm hopping that now that BMW had to admit to recalling cars that they refund your money back.

I am also waiting for BMW to get off the pot and give me my money back for one cracked wheel (spare you the story) if they don't they will also hear from my lawyer. So far they are playing games (another long story)

The short and long of it all is they seam to be very good as of late to piss loyal customers off ... guess they don't mind if we look for another make of car next time around.

BMW Dealer did software update on my car yesterday. No more long engine cranks. We'll see how long this solution works.

Don't wait around for a recall letter if you have symptoms of HPFP failure. Bring it to the dealer now.

There is no telling when this recall letter will go out or if they will have a permanent fix at that time, or if it will be the exact software update they did for me yesterday, which is still not proven to be the permament fix.

Does anyone have a fly swatter? I want to kill that bug 3 inched up!!!!!!!

Good luck with your HPFP, I asked my BMW Service Manager today about the recall he said "its coming" so far my car is okay just over 26,000 KM on the clock.

Bring it back to Flagstaff

"It's coming" = "We have NFC whatsoever"
