Install-wise it should be straight forward if you don't mind taking your dash panels off. I've had all of mine off before for when I wrapped them so I know what I'm doing. Mine should be here in around a week and half so I'll be looking at installing it the following weekend, then I'll do a full unbox, install and how it works video. I'll capture it on multi angles as I'll be using three cameras at the same time and then edit it all together. I'll also put a How-To together to go with that.

Yes, I was wondering if I can have the rapper MHD on the screen as a wallpaper option. Lol, the app of course 😁 Actually never heard of the rapper, maybe he’s big on the other side of the pond lol.

Suggestion: use the Unichip Carplay box for CIC
My suggestion: get a CarPlay box from Unichip.
If you want to preserve the Z4 dashboard look and screen, this is best option See: https://e89.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1480721 Pro: - backup cam - 100% stock, keep your headunit and flipscreen - Internet connection secured using your IPHONE - Carplay by Apple, more and more apps support it. Con: - need to remove the headunit and put a box behind the glove box. - the microphone is external - Aux is external |

Using Unichip assumes you have a stock iDrive screen to begin with. If not, you need to add a screen somewhere.
Adding an AVIN-type screen on top of the dash is certainly a viable solution for those without iDrive. However, I am conflicted. I added an 8.8" horizontal screen head unit from Joying in the center stack where the radio originally was. I'm not sure which location is better. The lower screen is more handy as a touch screen (it is right there where your hand rests on the gear shifter), but it requires you to look down further from the road. The screen on top of the dash is more along your line of sight, but it is quite a reach to use as a touch screen. If you can add an iDrive-like selector dial that will work with CarPlay, that will make the location of the screen on the dash less of an issue. Then it becomes a purely aesthetic issue. What is preferable, putting a non-retractable screen on top of the dash, or putting a floating screen screen smack dab in the middle of the dash? YMMV |

Another way.
I understand the love for android auto. But a simple tablet install and you have everything. Except idrive control useless. See post... "Back-Up Cam?"

I've seen some DIY tablet installs before and not that I'd ever knock anyone for trying (because it takes guts and ingenuity to do that and I applaud them) they never quite look "factory", this unit looks factory and integrates into the cars own systems seamlessly as you'd want it to. And to state a point, it's Android Auto and Apple Car Play compatible so can appeal to both sides of the coin.

If anyone does fancy one for the e85/86 then the version for the e83 will fit with some modification to the existing set nav hole or cutting the hole if you don't currently have sat nav. The only other pre-requisit is that it must have the flat pins on the radio loom plug in the back, round pins won't work. EDIT** If anyone wants one of these for the e85/86, or knows someone who would, then, as above, it can be achieved by installing one for the e83 (x3).
