I think the new one is a great looking car, however I prefer the rear of the E85 and don't feel like my 2004 looks outdated yet.
Also, considering you could have three E85s for the price of one E89 the allure of the new one fades for me. I know, the new car has the smooth power and sophistication of a new design, but I'm just saying.......

wow I couldnt disagree more. The new one is all elegance and a classic. The old one had lines that didnt make sense and didnt flow. It actually looks like its melting compared to the new one. The new one is gorgeous from every angle.

i like the new one...bmw did a great job of evolving it. even if it's for a different crowd. Let's just say if the new felt like my z4m I would buy one
But this rear end is much better

Just browsed my way to this old thread. Just found interesting that people can actually like the look of the e85/e86. I guess it is really a controversial design. To me it was by far the ugliest BMW in history. The rear looks chopped off with round lights. Kind of like a mustang crossed with a fiat but only with their worst features. Absolutely no harmony in the design. The front just looks plain and sad. Almost Miata like for the headlights or as some others have said a disfigured shark. Seen from the side, good god,... weird looking lines all over. As if the on designer had the front and another had the back and somehow they tried to mix it. I had a Z3 and I think I resold it with no depreciation at all because the Z4 was so ugly that the Z3 market picked up after the Z4 launch. The new e89 Z4 finally got me back into a Z car... But it is really fascinating that some people actually liked the e85.

I like them both.
Bought the new one though because it is bigger (just like me) and roomier. Oh, and the folding hard top.. musn't forget that. Over here the sun ages cloth tops soooo quickly. A metal roof allows us to use the car all the time and to be able to keep it looking like new. That was the clincher for me anyway..

I absolutely love the aggressive styling of the nose of the new Z4....the rear end completely blows the looks, IMO. Starts out aggressive and softens to a feminine rounded look. If only BMW will make a true fixed roof coupe of the E89 and give it as an aggressive rear as it does the front, it will be a true winner! (And then I will buy one....)

Looks like a military base with everyone having sports cars! LOL
The new one from the front looks aggressive and the old one a bit droopy on the headlights. I like the diffuser on the M roadster from the rear! Both cars look great in their own way!
