My method was three fold: 1) Pen cap (acts as a plastic stalk to push the custom flat surface) 2) Pen cap connects to a small cut out credit card square plate (use any old credit card) - cut two squares to fit into the space 3) Sandwich double tape between the two credit card squares, adjust thickness as needed (by adding more double tape. Trail and error until you feel the two rubber buttons are pushed by the switch.'

I removed my light switch and the wiring for rear fogs is not installed in the car so even if you install a Euro switch it won't work. Don't know if the bulbs are there.

There is more to this. I am in Germany right now with a U.S. Spec 2011 Z4 35i. I am trying to get my rear fogs working as I am moving to the UK next month.
Mine has the 6 wires, and I have changed the switch as well as the rear lights (for UK). Of course it is not working. It may be the missing 7th wire but I doubt it, here is why: The cable assemblies for the US and EU spec cars are the same according to Realoem. The only difference in part numbers is if the car has adaptive headlights. My wife has a Mini and we are in the same boat with it. Here is a difference though. I have read that the car has to be reprogrammed to recognize the 5AA option. I would bet the Z needs to be programmed as well. Any thoughts? |

@ ChuckB, I will pull mine tomorrow if it is not too cold, you know how it has been here.
The prt number was different for EU cars with S524 I think it was, (which is cornering lights). So if your ride has the adaptive lights, the 7 wire should be there as it is. Otherwise yeah, they may have it jacked up. |

one year old thread and the winter made me think about this again. My car has the S524A so I am going to attempt the retrofit... Ordering the switch now.

just finally got to look into this. Tried installing the unit in my is and it does not seem to work. My harness only has 6 wires.
I have not yet pulled my 30i. I may take a look at it too. Will try to see if coding is needed.

This follow up is years after the original posts, but I have the same problem with a 2009 E89 Z4 purchased in USA and now in Portugal. Was there a solution to this problem?

A few years late on this one, but I have a USA Z4 in Portugal, now trying to get the rear fog light to work as it is required for inspection. I have installed the European switch, but not working. I believe the USA wiring only has 6 wires. BMW here in Portugal tells me that they can activate the fog light with the computer, so does anyone know how to now get the switch connected and if required, reprogrammed?

May want to PM these people, as many have not posted for a few years. Hopefully they get the automated email and will respond...
Also - have you checked the European focused z4 site? Don't think I can post the link out here... |

Bumping this thread.
I have successfully enabled fog lights on my US spec Z4 E89. No coding is required. This is how I did it: 1. Get the European LCM (Light Control Module). The spare part number is 61319184275 (for cars with rain sensor). Or modify your existing US switch (remove the tabs on the blank button etc, described earlier in this thread) US version of the LCM without the fog light button European version of the LCM with the fog light button 2. Prepare a thin electrical wire (0,35mm wire grade according to BMW’s wiring diagram system). I made mine about 40cm long. (16 inches) which is more than enough to reach from the LCM down to the FRM (footweel module). The European Z4 version has this wire from factory and the color is yellow/black. Crimp one “MQS Socket Terminal” (spare part number 61131383776) on each end of the wire. These sockets require special crimping tools, which I don’t have so I soldered the stripped wire part in the socket and used a small plier to bend the tabs around the wire and the none-stripped part of the wire. MQS Terminal pins (61131383776) Soldering the MQS Socket Terminal 3. Disconnect the negative lead from your battery. 4. Remove the left instrument panel trim. I used masking tape to protect the surrounding panels from scratches. LCM removed 5. Unlock the LCM plug connector (X10164) from the LCM and remove the cover from the X10164 connector. Insert one of the ends of your wire in pin 9 “Signal, rear fog light”. (The pins are numbered 1-12. You will find a 1, 6, 7 and 12 engraved in the plastic cover of the connector.) Pin #9 on the X10164 connector 6. Remove the screws from your trim panel above the pedals. Disconnect and unlock all plug connections (footwell light, speaker, aerial) and remove the trim panel. 7. Unlock and unplug the two plug connections (X14260 and X14261) for the FRM and put aside. Unclip the tabs holding the module and slide the FRM downwards. Unlock and unplug the third FRM connector (X14259). 8. Remove the cover for the X14259 connector. 9. Route your cable from the LCM down to the top of the FRM X14259 connector. I used electrical tape to secure the wire along its way down to the X14259. 10. Insert the MQS socket terminal of your wire in pin 14 on the X14259 connector. The pins on the X14259 connector are numbered 1-26 and you can see the numbers engraved in the plastic of the connector. 11. Slide the cover of the X14259 connector back on. 12. Assemble all the connectors to your modules (LCM and FRM) and connect your battery. You should now be able to test if the fog light is working. 13. Assemble in reverse order I have tested this with US as well as European tail lights. Both types work. It will light up the outer brake lights on both tail lights. Pin assignments for the plug connector X14259 (back of Light Control Module) Last edited by nicke_1; 04-27-2020 at 10:38 AM.. |
