Here's a a white-tail buck that I shot after sundown this Sunday, hand held at 700mm, thanks to ISO 6400, +2/3EV, f/5.6 and 1/320-sec:

The Luminescence Detail is actually pushed down (by me) because I'd rather have grain than lose detail. The Chrominance is at default level for my DxO program.

I don't what that dead spot is on the left. It's much more than a pixel and doesn't show on my other images. It must be a processing byproduct, but I need to examine the Raw file to see if its from the sensor and just in this circumstance.

Anyway, this could be used, if the subject were important enough. I have this guy in great light, so this is merely for demonstration. Also, focus is off a little, on the chest I believe.

I actually pulled the Luminance down to around 10, which raised the grainyness and left the Chromanance at 50, which isn't that high. It was almost dark when I took this, with the sun down for almost 20-minutes.

It looks decent in the 1024 size and smaller, demonstrating the usefulness for important subjects, like Bigfoot. I see this guy weekly, so this will never be for sale.

The focus is relatively poor and the low SS and long focal length contribute to the "smear", but I agree, this is good, but not great.

That's a nice shot, perhaps taken on a tripod, with perfect focus on the subject. The light colored BG also helps, as does the regular cloth surface of the bag, although my bokeh is just as good I think. Fur can really challenge the camera and emphasize noise and the impact of NR.

My shot doesn't show the camera in its best light, but is really challenging. After all, it was shot at night.

no tripod. handheld with a $200 lens. i encourage you to shoot more at that ISO and inspect your results.

I've been shooting at 6400 for years. Some subjects are much easier than others.

You probably know this, but at 6400 it has less than a stop better DR than the MkII, according to DxOMark.

I'm really curious to see more of the 1D-X at high ISO in nature shooting. That looks very promising. I'm going to wait to see what the 7D MkII does before I decide on my next body, but the 1D-X does have its attractions.

the sharpness on the above image of the bag is beautiful compared to the deer (I do believe you may have missed the focus) but a lot of that deals with the available light to the photographer. Given the deer image was taken 20 min after sun down, its pretty amazing IMO) I've been on this thread a while and have not contributed much but here is my take.

a few weeks ago, I shot a wedding in Tahoe, below is an image shot at ISO 2500 (I rarely go up this high during my shoots), f/1.8, 1/100 @35mm. in LR4, I boost the exposure +1.07. all in camera NR was turned off.



I've shot 5 weddings with this camera and I really do love how it's been performing. Like everyone else's problem with the camera, I really do wish the AF point was illuminated. Other than that, i feel like the camera is a solid build. I really cant give you much information about how the camera metering is in different lighting conditions since I am shooting Manual, but if you know your settings, you'll be fine.

AF during the reception has been great. only trouble I ever have is when children are dancing in a circle, all available light is blocked by towering adults so AF becomes a little sluggish; still locks on but you need to give it a little bit of time. I've learn to just perceive distances and just manual focus and shoot (so shooting in low light doesn't really bother me if AF fails me)

Now that I've used my 5D MkIII for over 7,000 images, I'm noticing more and more how unreliable my 7D's AF is. Generally, when shooting wildlife, I've got my 500mm and 1.4X TC on the 5D MkIII and my 70-200mm f/4L IS on my 7D, both with AI Servo on, in case there's action. Sunday, a group of mule-deer bucks came walking by in nice light and low speed. One-third of my 7D images were OOF.

90% of my 5D MkIII images are critically sharp, in challenging circumstances and only 70% of my 7D images are critically focused, even in non-challenging situations.

I shot a gathering at my church on Sunday with lots of kids' activities. Almost every shot was in critical focus. This is typical, not the exception:
