Today will see us pass through 4 states. Man, they be little out here.

Target #1 today is Albany, NY - the state capital. Been hearing about Albany all my life, it seems. Plus, they have a not so standard looking statehouse.

We find the capitol grounds and park near Chancellor Hall, the New York State Education Building. The 36 Corinthian columns form the longest colonnade in the US.

The capitol is just across the street - completed in 1899 after 30 years of construction. The building is in a Romanesque style. Completely unique to any capitol we've ever seen.

The first floor has paintings of all the governors. A literal who's who of American politics. Four of New York's governors have become President.

William H. Seward: Governor of New York, US Senator, Secretary of State under Lincoln and Johnson. Negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7 million in 1867. (Seward's Folly. Who's laughing now?)

We cross the Mohawk River to Waterford and stop at the eastern terminus of the Erie Canal. The canal tapped in to the Hudson River here and was built to become the first navigable waterway that would connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes above Niagara Falls. It is 351 miles long and was constructed between 1817 and 1825 - all dug without any of today's modern construction equipment. Just imagine the toxic masculinity. Pictures are at the blue dot.

Brattleboro is another charming small New England town of about 12,000 and after a quick tour we cross the Connecticut River into New Hampshire - our 3rd state today, and it's only 2 o'clock. We then push on to Concord, the state capital, 90 minutes away.

Gotta scoot again - next up is Portsmouth, NH - about an hour away.

We actually run through Portsmouth real quick and we stop by the stately Wentworth By The Sea, a historic grand resort hotel in nearby New Castle. It was originally built in 1874. In 1905, the hotel housed the Russian and Japanese delegations who signed the Treaty of Portsmouth, thus ending the Russo-Japanese War. US President Theodore Roosevelt had suggested and facilitated the peace talks and won the Nobel Peace Prize for doing so.

Now all we gotta do is make our way to Portland, Maine. It's about 7:00, but we are still an hour away. I was going to take Hwy 1 and wander through Kennebunkport, but I-95 called. Tomorrow is an early start and we've seen Kennebunkport, although it was in 2004.

After getting to the hotel and looking ahead to tomorrow's 390 mile day, it was time to call an audible at the line. The goal tomorrow was Saint John, New Brunswick. Then we'd go up to the Bay of Fundy the next day and over to Halifax. But, if we did the rocky coast of Maine tomorrow, I'm realizing it would be extremely slow going. Plus, I'm at 9,300 miles with an oil change due. I had made an appointment for an 8:00 AM oil change tomorrow at BMW of Westbrook, conveniently less than a mile from the hotel. But, you never know how long they are going to take.

So, I scratched Saint John and moved up tomorrow's stop to Bangor, Maine - thus cutting the mileage from 390 to 203. 390?? What was I even thinking back in March? But, that means the next day becomes 460 miles (also unacceptable) so we brilliantly decided to catch the ferry across the Bay of Fundy from Saint John to Nova Scotia, cutting the driving distance down to a manageable 338. The hotel in Saint John was cancelled and rebooked to Bangor and reservations made for the ferry. It would only be a 3 hour drive to the dock in the morning, for a 1:15 check-in and 2:15 departure.

It was the only change we made on the entire trip.

The oil change goes off without a hitch (Thank you Adam & BMW of Westbrook) and we are able to leave the hotel by 9:30. We head over to South Portland and the Portland Head Lighthouse. We get there by 10, and it is a glorious morning. I skooch up next to a bro.

We then head over to Commercial Street on the Portland bayfront. Including my hometown, this is the 3rd Portland I've been in on this trip. It is also the Portland my city was named after when two guys decided to name the fledgling western town in 1845. Asa Lovejoy, from Massachusetts, wanted Boston. Francis Pettygrove, from Maine, wanted Portland. They decided to toss a coin. Two out of three flips later and there was a Portland on the West Coast.

Fun fact - the Penobscott bridge was built by Cianbro Construction which is headquartered in Pittsfield Maine, just outside Bangor. I visited the HQ in Aug 2024 on a work trip and checked Maine off my states visited list.

Penobscott is fun to say.

Halifax Day - Wow

A lot of new stuff today. Two new Canadian provinces: New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. And, of course, Halifax - a small dot in a distant land for so many years. Giddy up.

The ferry at Saint John leaves at 2:15, line up at 1:15. It is only 3 hours away on Hwy 9, which is mostly uneventful Maine countryside. We leave before 9:00.

We get to no more Maine at the border crossing of Calais. One car ahead of us and we are in New Brunswick - Province #5.

I see that my phone clock and the car clock are off an hour. Holy crap, the Maritime Provinces are another time zone further east - called Atlantic Daylight Time. It's actually an hour later than we think it is. We grab lunch at a drive-thru window and race to the dock. Made it.

The ferry for Digby, Nova Scotia leaves exactly at 2:15 PM, about the time I would've been pulling up to get in line. Dodged that bullet. I've never been able to get a BMW clock to change time zones, even though it says it is set up to do so.

We take Hwy 8 directly over to the Atlantic side of Nova Scotia, crossing a lonely plateau of mostly uninhabited land - no towns, no gas, no food. Our target is Lunenberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, founded in 1753 by the British.

Back in the room, my sister calls from Portland. My mom passed today. I was able to see her at the nursing home on Mother's Day before we left. She had been declining for years, but took a turn for the worse when we were about 3,000 miles out and was not expected to last more than a day or two - at least not long enough until we could get back, as we were seven days away at the time. So, we pushed on. She went a couple days longer than expected, but, it is what it was. She would have said, "You kids keep going! Don't fuss with me." She was a travel bug in her own right.

A day of highs and lows. I finally make to Halifax and suddenly I'm an orphan. Jeez.

The day dawns cold and windy - I think you're really supposed to visit Halifax in July.

Halifax is the largest city (440,000) and capital of Nova Scotia. It has one of the largest and deepest ice free harbors in the world. Founded in 1749, it became a strategic military and naval base, taking on important roles even through WWI and WWII.

We stroll along the waterfront and find the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

The museum is chock full of maritime history, which is basically the history of Halifax. It also has a tremendous collection of model ships, both military and passenger.

Halifax was the jumping off point for convoys taking supplies to Europe during WWI and WWII

Plus, an extensive Titanic exhibit, as the city played a vital role in the recovery of the victims in April 1912.

Another disaster, a few years after the Titanic, had a more profound effect on the city of Halifax. In December of 1917, during WWI, the SS Mont-Blanc was hit by the Norwegian ship SS Imo in the harbor as the Imo had mistakenly navigated a shipping channel through a straight called the Narrows. The Mont-Blanc - fully loaded with TNT and highly flammable fuel - was to join a convoy scheduled to depart for Europe. In the Narrows, the Imo went for the wrong side and the ships collided at 8:45 AM. The damage wasn't catastrophic, but the fuel barrels on the Mont-Blanc tipped over and flooded into the hold.

When the Imo tried to disengage, it created sparks and set the fuel on fire. 20 minutes later, the Mont-Blanc was blown to smithereens. Nearly all structures within a half mile were obliterated, as the blast wave of 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit travelled at over 3,000 ft/second.

We say our goodbyes to Halifax and head for the open road - Hwy 107 along the coast up to Sheet Harbor. The weather is nasty.

We stop for lunch at the only restaurant in town and grab some fish and chips. Our original idea was to catch the ferry at Caribou, up on the Northumberland Straight and cross over to Prince Edward Island. Again, we call an audible, cancelled the ferry and decided to add many more miles to the day by driving there. A longer drive versus stormy seas seemed like the better choice.

We drive through wind and rain for three hours without seeing much. As we near the bridge to Prince Edward Island, the skies open up and all hell breaks loose. We pull off, start up again, pull off and start up again.

This was the 3rd time we stopped. It was ureal - but the brave plowed on. Might be the most violent rain storm we've ever experienced.

We reach the outskirts of Charlottetown, drop our bags at the hotel and go downtown for dinner and a look see. Charlottetown is the capital of Prince Edward Island and might have been fun to walk around - in July. But, it's cold and windy and a bit rainy. We grab dinner, take a few pics of the colorful town and call it a day. We make it back to the hotel after 8 o'clock.

Snowbimmer, I always look forward to your tales of travel, accompanied, of course, by some amazing photography. I have been retired for a while now, but the wife is still closing out that particular life task. Soon, within a year, I hope to start covering much of the same ground you have traversed. Thank you very much for reminding all of us just how amazing traveling the USA can be. Keep it up brother!

Great trip and pictures

That is a great trip, fantastic pictures, and thank you for sharing. It is amazing how beautiful and large the US is, and it is best experienced by car. Good for you.

Your trip brought back memories, when my family packed up in our station wagon, and drove cross-country from NJ to CA and back. Between high school and college, a school friend of mine and I took another cross-country trip, driving 10,000 miles, in one month, around the perimeter of the contiguous 48. We drove a green Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus coupe, with a 400 cubic inch (6.6L) big-block V8, producing roughly 255 hp. In TX we doubled the national speed limit, driving 110 mph, but it was dicey, as the front end was getting very light at that speed. Stops included Orlando, New Orleans, San Antonio, El Paso, Grand Canyon, Vegas, LA, Yosemite, SF, Seattle, Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Chicago, and Maine. Obviously, no nav system or GPS, just AAA Trip-Tiks, maps, and a CB radio. A memory for a lifetime, as I am sure your trip was too.

138 hours, 24 hours a day = 5 and 3/4 days spent in the car. If anyone had to ask about the 850 as a daily driver or a road trip car, I'm guessing the first question based on that metric alone would be: How are the seats and suspension?

Pretty epic journey so far! Been loving reading all of the details to this point. I'm a lizard by birth (AZ) so cold and rainy aren't my cup of tea but it's definitely got me thinking about a road trip on the southern side of the US in the future.

Seats are great. We had several 13 hour days (not all of it driving) and three 575 mile days (almost all of it driving). I never get tired or sore. The wife may disagree.

Suspension is great because it is an M850.

It was a hand-me-down car, that was originally driven by my older sister. My older brother had convinced my dad that my sister needed the bigger engine for safety reasons so she could have quicker highway merges and be better able to pass traffic. The car had an amazing howl at full throttle, and at idle, sounded like a top fuel dragster. The brakes were horrible, and the steering had little feel and was light, but accelerating never got old. Getting 8 mpg was common. Maybe I missed it, but what was your mpg for the trip? I am amazed at the relative good fuel economy, of all the 8-series models, given the size and performance of these cars. And now we have a benchmark about how many miles it will take to drive further than 100% of the rest of the 8-Series owners. ;-)

P.S. That older brother had a British Racing Green ‘68 Dodge Charger R/T with a 440 cu in V8 Magnum engine having a 4-barrel carburetor, and generating 375 bhp. It was a beautiful car, with a full vinyl roof, but unfortunately, it was stolen at night from my folk’s driveway. That was replaced with a ‘72 British Racing Green Charger SE, with a half vinyl roof, and a Magnum V8. The ‘68 was my favorite. And at the same time he owned the ‘72 Charger, he also owned a Lime Green ’72 DeTomaso Pantera, which we drove from NJ to Maine when he dropped me off at summer camp. Amazingly, we stored my footlocker in that car, which to this day, we both don’t know how we did that. Best drive to camp, ever!

Amazing post. The work and organization that went into stitching this tour together is impressive. This is what GT cars are meant for. I hope to be able to accomplish this one day.

That's... a lot of driving! Thanks for documenting it so amazingly – looks like you guys had a blast. The "Your Trips" destinations screen is hilarious.

It's funny: I've never had any interest whatsoever in driving cross-country in an RV, which seems like torture rather than fun, but I'd definitely do this if I had the time. I think that the actual driving is (at least) half of the attraction for me, so doing it in an awesome car rather than a lumbering behemoth is all the difference in the world. Plus I'd rather just stay in an actual hotel with actual beds and an actual shower than a poor approximation of all of these.

I want your older brother for an older brother. That is some automotive legacy. Too bad about the theft. I would have been apoplectic.

The M850 averaged 23.9 mpg, with several fill-ups in the 29 mpg range and one actually over 30. We spent a lot of time in some major cities that brought the average down.

Ha ha. I think you could do about 1500 miles in an 8er and win the 100% useage championship each month.

Thanks. It's a ton of work, but I have something useful when I'm done. I wish I had documented trips of my earlier adult life somehow. You forget what you did, where you went and when you went. I have so many trips that are just photos crammed into a box sitting in the basement.
