My next visit will definitely bring up this thread and issue and ask the service dept to take a look at the hydrolic hoses of the top.

I'll be coming up on the 4 year warranty date in a few months and am trying to decide whether to get the extended OEM warranty or not. I have very low mileage and the car has been perfect since new, but I am leaning towards getting it from a peace of mind standpoint. Also will get a small discount because of the low mileage.
I would have certainly expected that the roof repair would have been covered, so I'm glad they changed their mind. It's not peace of mind if they are going to be looking at ways to not honor claims ! |

Another hydraulic leak story, for what it is worth.
I've dealt with this several time since buying a CPO E89 in Aug'13. It had 19K miles and was a 2011. I traveled to get the car which appeared to be in perfect condition and I assumed the CPO meant something... Here is the tale. When I got home after a 3 hour drive a noticed a small drop of oil where the small trap doors in the deck allow the roof machism to sit when the top in retracted. Took it to the dealer. As a CPO they fixed it but it took a week to get the one tech who specializes on interiors and this tech stuff. No warranty problem. They also gave me a very nice 528i as a loaner, so I don't care. (or so I thought) 2 months later....another leak. This time it takes another 2 weeks, but since the weather was turning colder (last fall) and the dealer is being super cool (cause BMW is paying) I chalk it up to bad luck. The SA assured me that "no one at the dealer" had seen systemic problems with the E89 or any of the origami roofs on other BMWs. Besides, it's my 'fun' car.... >> The techs are really nervous about this job (10 hours or so!), they're never seen this repair before, so they're going to wait until their shop supervisor comes back from BMW training. << Guess what: THIRD TIME - this time they call in regional, the Service manager and the tech. They remove the entire roof, bring in another E89 and supposedly did a side-by-side comparison of mine with the other E89. Re-plumbed what needed to be done and verified the rest. CPO, not charge. But, the dealer is now concerned because while BMW pays for repairs, the service manager is on the hook for the loaner car. A nice 320D fit the bill for 2 more weeks. It's been perfect all spring so I am praying hard they solved the problem either through research or luck. I have read the CPO and extended warranties thoroughly. THe best I can tell....ALL ROOF COMPONENTS are EXCLUDED from warranty. Not just the hoses, but the non-wear items including wiring, switches, and pump. Luckily I've got 16 months left on the original owner warranty. After that, like CDESLANDES, I am on my own to beg and please. I was seriously going to pursue the original dealer as they certified the car. I was told not to bother BMW NA because they've been paying so what more could I ask them to do at this point? I have no real economic loss. Couldn't even claim loss of use because it was horrible winter To ZettVier: A HUGE THANKS....This is the first time I've seen technical info regarding the lines...I've spend dozens of hours looking online but couldn't find many reports let alone technical details, Ich spreche kein Deutsch. I'll be sure to bookmark it.

One avenue to check for extended warranty coverage is the Geico "mechanical breakdown insurance". It can be added on cars less than 15 months old and with less than 15k miles. I checked it out some time ago, and it did not look like it had too many exclusions. Could be a good way to get the roof covered. By the way, I like the Z4 in your signature! Seems like we have almost the same car, 1 model year apart. |

This thread made me double check the insured warranty (year 5 car) and that shows the below exclusions. Other than them trying on 'its a service item' which it can't be, it seems the insured warranty should cover hoses etc for the roof;
Items NOT covered by the Comprehensive Insured Warranty (UK): All exhaust components (except catalytic converter) All service items which will require periodic replacement Any item that has worn out rather than suffered from a defect Auxiliary drive belts Batteries Brake and clutch facings Bulbs and fuses Channels and guides Cleaning or adjustment of any component Coolant and fuel hoses Discs and drums Glass Handles, hinges and check straps Trim, upholstery and cosmetic finishes Wheels and tyres Wiper blades and arms Weather strips and seals |

Hi Nicknaz,
Here's the exclusions on the US warranty (note: this is AFTER the first 4 years such as certified pre-owned or the extended warranty BMW sells) During the first 4 years the entire top is covered (all my issues were taken care of). I'm just worried about what happens when my the 4 years is up. Upkeep Items Maintenance; engine, transmission, and body adjustments; wheel alignment, balancing or rotation; wiper blade inserts; engine drive belts; spark plugs; filters; fuses; all batteries; all hoses and clamps (except air conditioning and power steering); oils, lubricants, fluids, refrigerants and coolants (except as required in the course of a covered repair); brake pads and rotors; brake shoes and drums; manual transmission clutch assemblies; suspension dampers (shock absorbers/strut elements); exhaust systems; tires. Wear and Tear All wear and tear items as defined in The Certified Pre-Owned BMW Protection Plan Consumer Information Statement (including all suspension parts and components). Body and Interior Paint; glass; headlamps; bulbs (except instrumentation); mirrors; lenses; body and chassis; body seals and gaskets; interior and exterior trim, moldings, and fasteners; upholstery, headliner, carpeting, floor and trunk mats; convertible top (all components except electronics); air or water leaks; wind or body noises; wheels; damage due to rust, corrosion, or contamination, except as covered by the BMW New Vehicle Rust and Corrosion Perforation Warranty. Accessories Radio/cassette player, telephone, navigation system, CD changer, or any components of those systems; non-original equipment parts, components or accessories.

Update: car is almost ready but the headliner was stained by leaking oil and they had to order a new one from Germany(!)
Should be ready in a day or two, will pick it up Monday when I'm back in town.

Yikes, what a (potential) headache. Maybe I don't want a drop-top long term after all.
Factory warranty until early 2017, then... well, the new M4 coupe looks pretty...

How about a really cool mod: Remove the roof entirely including wiring, pump, operating mechanism, roof panels, rear window, etc. and replace it with a carbon fiber deck. I'll bet you could dump 200 lbs, lower the center of gravity, triple the top-down storage and save $thousands on future repairs.
Just stay out of the rain

Congrats. And, please do. I just bought a 2009 and the hydraulic roof is one of the main reasons I chose to pay $1275 to transfer the balance of the extended warranty. It gets me through January 2017, which gives me some piece of mind.

I finally found the time to scan the invoice.
As you can see it's quite a bit of work to fix a simple hydraulic leak. The dealership did a great job having BMW pick up the tab. Otherwise that would have been about $1,600 in parts plus $1,400 in labor!

Hi Cdeslandes,
so sorry for your troubles. May I ask how many times, in average, you used to open and close your rooftop ? Daily ? Once or twice a day ? Less ? More ? Was this leak caused by wear ? Am starting to get worried... Thanks. |

I personally open/close mine at least twice a day. Here in South Florida that’s every day.
