Had mine at the Dealer for 3 Weeks, they did all sorts of test, they were able to reproduce the noise after I teached them how. (Driving a certain angle up their Ramp)
They said everything is ok no defects or damage can occour. Sometime next week I ll stop by them again and want this statement writen and signed. So in case my rear axis / stabilizer dies, they pay. Works for me. |

Was the problems ever resolved.
I have 2009 23i manual, with 30k miles, had it 6 weeks, now noticing the rear clunk when first turning left or right, and sometimes if i go over rough road. Have a one year BMW warranty, so want stuff like this fixed, but don't want to be fobbed off with some excuse. |

Well today got fed up of the noise, went to local dealer where i was told it would cost me £100 for them to investigate, if found not to be approved warranty fault.
So i jacked up the vehicle and had a look. Within a minute i grasped a drive shaft to the right wheel and it would slide laterally along its length about 3/4 inch and bang one way against wheel hub then bang the other way against inside of the differential! I've never come across a design like this before, usually one end or both are tied via a cv joint. This seems to use a splined joint each end which is free to float and bang at either end. The noise sounds right. Then went for a test run. Drove car and then i swerved or s turned, this seemed to centre the shafts so no noise at speed in a straight line and turning at speed. But when i slowed down to turn through 90 degrees such as normal junction a knock would occur, then on next opposite turn another knock. I think the difference in wheel rotation is throwing one or other shaft against the wheel hub or diff. The car as done 30k, the shaft gaiters seem very thin. I wonder if now they have become soft through wear they used to act as dampers but now allow the shafts to float and bang. I can see me having a fight to get these fixed under warranty. |

Well BMW dealer had a look, no joy, admits theres a clunk as the techie heard it when he came along for a ride, but couldn't find anything amiss having had a 30min look around on the ramp for £45.
Just gave me the keys back with a greasy hand marks over the cream leather door panel and arm rest! Found a spot on a car park were i can generate clunk on regular basis. Tried putting camera on video mode to record sound in boot of car, the noise is loud enough to record, loudest seems to be the middle of the boot with trim up. One observation it seems to happen when the wheel goes to full extension, when it drops into a depression in the road and if you reverse it sort of resets with a similiar clunk. Out of frustration sprayed all bushes and rear mounts with oil to see if that would make any difference, non so far. Last edited by bigendbob; 08-15-2012 at 06:04 PM.. |

Having slept on the problem the next theory possibly is a problem with the dampers bottoming out. The rear drive assembly seems to be bolted via rubber bushes to body so no noise should be transmitted there.
The dampers are the only parts with any solid connection. If the body work is so stiff that when one rear wheel crosses a hole the wheel hangs in mid air so to speak and damper bottoms out. Could be the springs are so strong that the rear is riding high almost to the point where the dampers are almost at full extension. So today will load boot with paving slabs and see if that makes a difference. Also may try disconnecting the dampers and try bouncing the car then a drive over test rut. Well tried the paving slabs, still no difference. Located noise on righthand side under boot compartment. Last edited by bigendbob; 08-17-2012 at 08:37 AM.. |

Well think i found the problem using my trusty casio camera on a broom handle.
Rear sub frame rubber mount disintegrating. only about 3-4mm clearance before metal-metal contact. In the right place to make the noise. Will get BMW to check all four and replace if possible. This is a 3 year old car so might be others out there will fault. |

Well had closer look at rubber before i go to B'em, and its ok having checked with an online parts diagram.
So now i'm stumped. Still trying to find, have tried removing the right shock and disconnected the roll bar, still get the sound! Now i have all the boot trim out! |

Take it to the dealer and refuse to take possession until they fix it or cover you under the Lemon Law - if unfixable after 3 tries. I would not do anything to my car unless I was out of warranty or was modding - my 0.02. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Redhot..yes you are right.
I will be going back tomorrow. I'm just too keen to try and sort it myself. I'm convinced its something to do with the cv joints |

My SWAG would be all is well. The half shafts have splined ends to allow full droop and when that happens at low rotation/slow speed we're Able to hear the end-of-travel, e.g. c-clip on half shaft stopping shaft travel against structure of u joint/yoke. You're fine. You can Google clunking noise, u-joint noise, etc. and find other brands do it also. Our ears are closer to the driven wheels and we can hear more than on most models. My e46 M3 has done this for 100k miles. Again, this is my SWAG.

Well i won't accept the noise.
Personally i want to find whats making the noise so that i can point it out to BMW and not get fobbed off with some lame excuse. Having climbed into the boot whilst it was driven theres definitly a bump being transmitted associated with the noise through the right side of the boot floor. |

trade it in or sell it, but save your sanity. You want to avoid your possessions possessing you.

Hi! I have the same issue, but mine gets worse the longer I drive the car! When going round a right hand corner clunk! drive on go round a left hand corner clunk! I also get it in when driving into say car parks on smooth surfaces!
So I had BMW technician in my car and he heard the noise, but as usual it was not as bad as it can be when driving alone!!! Because of tire noise it also makes it difficult to hear plus it seems to happen more when a passenger is in the car as well! My car has done 12.5k but I feel it may have been hammered before I bought it with 5.2k on the clock. The rear bridgestones will need replacing at 13.5k ish. Car still has 12 months warranty on it so I want it fixing!!!! Any other suggestions as my car goes back in on Monday!!!! |

Just got my car back from the dealership. on the invoice it states "removed driveshaft, diff flange nut using special tools. Inspected with foreman, installed lock tite #242. on flange and bihexigon nuts. Let it dried over night, repeated roadtest, confirmed noise fixed."
any idea of that? it did reduce the noise a lot, but I still can hear it..... |

Well my noise is coming back, so i am assuming the grease on the rubber bushes has worn off. Have now purchased some polyureathane bushes. These come with grease. When i get access to a ramp, will fit them and see the result.
