UPDATE: Apparently scuffed-up bumpers are not uncommon -- they were able to get the new bumper, do the paint, and get it installed on the car in only 2 days. The car looks immaculate. If I had not known about the damage, it would be impossible to detect. The sales manager was really nice about it and took good care of me. Needless to say, I didn't walk away. I'm happy.
By the way, is this one good looking car or what? Michael |

You made the wrong decision. You should have gotten that new 6-series instead! lolll jk
Very nice. But is that bumper scuffed on the bottom already?

I'd check those panel gaps too, that second photo seems to show a large black gap between the bumper (fender) and the wing panel. Lamp alignment also seems to show a gap underneath?

Great looking car Mike,
Is this a purchase or a rental? They seem to have scraped the right front corner already.

New Bumper fitted
First let me say this car is fantastic. Before I even realized, I'd put 60 miles on it the first day. It's a gem.
Came along side an E46 M3, a car for which I have much love and respect, at a stoplight last night. After a brief informal chat the owner, I proceeded to hand him his ass. Convincingly. I was as surprised as he, so at the next stoplight we repeated the exercise. Exact same results. Apparently it takes an E90 M3 (V8), or better, to deal with this new twin-turbo Z4. Yes, the entire front facia was replaced, and straightaway I noticed the gap between the hood and the bumper on the right side looked a little off. And yes, there is a scuff mark on the bottom already, which I think probably happened during reassembly (You guys don't miss anything, that's why I'm a member of this forum). I'm not too worried about getting these remaining small cosmetic issues sorted out. As I mentioned, the sales manager is taking *very* good care of me on this deal. Michael |

Glad to hear it Michael! Seriously make sure they fix those remaining little problems... Do it sooner rather than later because BMW will be emailing you their CSI (Consumer Survey Index) soon. The sales manager and your CA should have the problems completed to your liking before you fill out that survey....assure them you will give them all "10's"...When and IF the car is done right!
IMO Alot of dealers after you give them a Great Score have a "who gives a shit" attitude and wont fix/honor what they said they would... Fix it soon bro! |

I hope that scuff isn't a sign of things to come. When stuff like this happens during reassembly, it's often an indication that the paint wasn't cured right (ie, too soft). I wouldn't be so critical, but that misalignment gap around the headlight is a rookie mistake. They shouldn't have let that out the door.

I happened to look at my front bumper that was fixed before I took delivery and it seems slightly misaligned. At this point, is there anything that I can do regarding having the dealer fix it? I took delivery a week or so ago.

REPLACE - parts are about $1k retail so for BMW it will be much cheaper. My paint and install for my wife's IS bumper was only $500 so the proper repair will not actually cost the dealer more than $1k.

Your dealer should take care of you. If they don't, contact the BMWNA rep.

My salesman indicated that the bumper misalignment would be taken care of straightaway. I'm kinda anal about documenting everything, so today I sent this email: From: Michael xxxx Subject: Z4 Replacement Front Bumper Cover Not Properly Installed Date: August 2, 2011 10:18:04 PM EDT To: Charles xxxx Cc: John xxxx Charles, Looking at the attached photos, you can see the issue we discussed yesterday regarding the improperly installed front bumper cover. My car (figure 1, silver) does not have the proper panel gap as shown in the reference photo (figure 2, white) taken from a BMW Z4 press release. Please arrange with your body shop to take care of this as soon as possible. Let me know when to bring the car to you. I am disappointed by the quality of this work. I hope this can be sorted out quickly. Thanks, Michael xxxx |

I think it's sad that so few people take pride in their work anymore. Hope you get it all fixed.

Good Michael, stay on top of it. FWIW, that should be an easy fix -- they either need to realign the bumper cover a teeny bit, or they simply forgot/missed a clip or fastener in that area.

Have the dealer fix it but get it in writing from them that you must be completely satisfied with the work before you will take delivery of the car.
No details, just that you need to be completely satisfied with the work. That way if for any reason the color is not matching to your liking or the alignment of the body panels is not spot on, etc., they have to do it again, until it meets your complete satisfaction. Only when they get it right should the transaction take place (They get their money and you get your car). |

Re:
Also.
Check the gaps at the inner most corners of both headlights (where the pointed part of the headlight meets up with the front grills). The gaps should be even on both sides of the headlights. I'm worried there might be a little damage in behind that bumper as well. Check all the plastic bits around the headlight to as there are lots of little clips and one might have come away. Hope you get a result. The car looks beautiful. |
