It does not include any mounting brackets for the truck. The deflector snaps in half lengthwise and comes with a canvas type bag to put it in if you want to store it.

Haven't got around to installing mine yet, been too cold past couple weeks, figure it best to work with plastic parts when a bit warmer. My deflector kit, as provided by my dealer, includes both the front (black) and rear (silver) roll bar covers, where the silver covers include holes for mounting brackets. The kit, as defined in the "Accessories" section of BMW USA site, includes all of these components:
Wind Deflector -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reduces air turbulence in the passenger compartment, even at high speeds. The wind deflector can be folded up and stowed conveniently away. Wind Deflector(PN: 54 34 7 200 808) Wind Deflector Cover-Rear Left(PN: 51 43 9 181 607) Wind Deflector Cover-Rear Right(PN: 51 43 9 181 608) Wind Deflector Cover-Front Left(PN: 51 43 9 128 411) Wind Deflector Cover-Front Right(PN: 51 43 9 128 412) $551.59 So, not sure why replacement front covers are to be included in this kit, as latest installation instructions do not call these out as "Additional Parts Required." Originally thought maybe both front and back covers were included on chance of breaking some clips, but if this were to happen, it would be the silver covers that are subjected to breakage. Instructions also indicate that clothing hook needs to be removed with this installation, but not sure this is necessary. |

For those considering the purchase of a wind deflector for their Z, I have shopped around and found the best prices to be from BMW of Lincoln in Lincoln, NE. They responded to my email inquiry quickly and ship free to the continental US. Mention bimmerfest and if you are a BMWCCA member mention their ad in The Roundel. They beat everyone else's prices by at least $20 and do not charge sales tax unless it is shipped to NE.

BMW of Lincoln's price is quite a bit cheaper but doing business with a local dealer is nice especially if they treat you nice. In my case, the nearest dealer is 75 miles away and not the dealer I bought from as they are even further away.

Well it warmed up a bit, so finally got around to installing wind deflector. Wasn't too bad, took me about 45 minutes. The black front covers were included in my kit, good thing, as I did nick up the originals when removing the back silver covers. Also, there's no need to remove clothng hooks as noted in the instructions. Anxious to try it out.

You must first pry off the rear silver covers, I nicked up the front black covers doing this. Once the silver covers are removed, you'll find the black covers are mounted to another internal plastic piece with screws that must be removed to replace this front black cover.

I'm buying new front and rear covers so I won't have to worry about screwing the old ones up when I remove them. Are the old ones held together by some sort of clips? What are you prying apart?

Good idea, getting replacement front covers, sure that you can return if you're successful in not damaging them. They're really not clips, the silver rear covers have 8 posts each ending in a ball. These balls then line up with receptacles on the front black covers that have rubber inserts to receive the balls, they do snap together quite snuggly. I used a wide bladed screw driver in the seam to pry apart, which did minor damage to both front and rear covers.
Am including copy of instructions given to me by my dealer to give you a better idea. Beware that these instructions are not quite right, shows the front covers snapping onto rear covers, but they held in place inside with screws. Instructions also indicate that the clothing hook must be removed, not true. Have fun. |

BarowJon,
Question for your expertise please. Just got my diffuser set. I only ordered the back (silver) posts with the diffuser. We'll see if I can minimize the damage prying them apart and reuse the fronts. Your info was just what I was looking for. The screws (part #5 in the install instructions part list) to attach the "screen guides" won't tap into the back (silver) posts, as the pre-drilled holes are too large - do they have a fastening mechanism built into the roll over bar, or did you use different hardware? Also for the folks who don't have the diffuser yet, it folds into a fairly small rectangle that comes with a leather like pouch for pretty convenient accessibility. Cheers and thanks to all |

There's an internal plastic piece/structure that will receive the bracket screws. Have a look at the first figure on page 3 and you'll see this part. It gets completely covered by the silver cover and is what the front black cover mounts taht in turn encloses the steel roll bar. Good luck & have fun.

"Installation After-Thought" - You might consider first placinng a wide-blade putty knife in the seam, using this to pry against, thus possibly preventing damage to the black covers.

Installed Diffuser today
Install went quick & easy thanks to all the forum info - recommend you look at the new silver roll over covers and see where the ball connectors are - use a flat screwdriver at that location and separate the silver back cover at those points so the screwdriver has best leverage - move it out a little bit at each connector point and work your way around - should be no problem not damaging the black front covers.
Really not a lot of physical product for the $400-$500 but its engineered nicely (like I'd expect from BMW) and stows nicely behind the seats. Pics below - Cheers Ross |

Thanks ramiles, great pics. Your post has convinced me there is no need to order new black front covers. Thanks for saving me some bucks!

E85 Wind Deflector vs E89 Wind Deflector
Wow what a great site for qualified information (owner qualified) my wife has had her Z4 about two weeks. Wem were told it came with all the bells and whisles. One that wasn't included was the wind deflector. Went back to the dealer and he ordered the wind deflector picked it up this morning and found I did not have the correct engineering qualifications to install this wind deflector. Reading these threads I learned that I had thw wrong wind deflector. The parts house (BMW) ordered one for the E85 not E89. Now we shall wait for the proper part number to arrive and see if my credentials have improved over time. Thank you all and best driving your Z4's.

You can definitely install this accessory. BMW only allows 30 minutes in the instructions. The hardest part is prying the plastic covers off the roll bars. Use a putty knife to create a gap and then carefully use a screwdriver to pry them apart using the putty knife to protect the edges of the front cover so you don't have to replace it. The front covers can stay on the car and do not need to be replaced if you are careful.
