NAV Map Updates, Other Software Updates?
Has anyone asked their dealer about map updates? I am curious to know if we will be entitled to free updates during the warranty period.
Also, is the dealer supposed to check for any software updates automatically and install them? My car is going in tomorrow for a trunk seal and I am wondering if I should ask. It is running fine, no problems so I am a little hesitant to ask.

WRT nav updates. Unless you negotiated them in your purchase price you pay if you want them.
WRT general software updates. They only update these for free if you have an issue for which there is a software fix. Then you get the whole shooting match !!

There is a 2010 map update for UK (Europe) Sat Nav, Was quoted around Ł130 for it over phone. when I get time I am going to speak face to face to see if I can get it cheaper, free may be a big ask, as the 2009 models had the 2008 sat nav ver in.
No idea about software updates though. |

Is this a DVD update, or does the dealer need to do it? Like you, I'm on 2008-02 and my car is a 2009 model. If its a DVD and you want to "share" the cost, PM me!

Hi Colonel, it's $199 plus tax and you actually get a disk. No software needed

Has anyone experience with installing new language(s) (in addition to standard language package preinstalled by BMW– which includes EN, DE and FR in my case) generally to the car, and in particular to Voice Instructions in BMW Navigation System?
Another question - is it possible to add my own/custom POIs to Nav. System? Local dealers in Vienna, Austria, do not know if the above are possible and how that could be done (may be because they never did that?). I have Navigation System version ECE BMW Group 101092.0.12, Road map Europe Premium 2010. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Thanks, I'll probably wait a year or so before I update my NAV maps. Car was in last week for a read deck seal replacement and no software updates were done. I am pleased because the car is running great.

Thank you, Memphis.
I had checked language package possibilities with some dealers here and was told that they did not know how to do that (read "we do not want to mess with this BS"). And it is pitty (shame on? ) that BMW's Nav Sustem does not have that kind of flexibility (in installing various voice guidance languages and adding POIs) that most of mobile nav sys have. E.g., on the Garmin's Nuvi that I use with my other car, I have a selection of more than 20 languages plus plenty of variations (male/female; US English/UK English/Australian English, etc). And PoI (like speed cams) can be added easily. But ... nothing is perfest in this life . As to hacking map - I am aware of this way and may be will try it if there are no other sulutions.

Last week I sent an enquiry to BMW HQ regarding possibility of adding custom’s PoIs and new languages to navigation system. Few minutes ago got a reply form BMW Partner Service that it is impossible.
I can not say that I was disappointed as such an answer was predictable. I just can not understand one thing – why BMW, while making such a great car as Z4, limits owners’ ability to customize equipment?

Is it a DVD
Is our Navi DVD based on Hard Drive based? On my owners manual, it says DVD, and push 1 and eject to retrieve the DVD. I'd done that and nothing comes out. I don't have a disc, but my navi functioned correctly.

so, lets start over...we have the hard drive system. you can buy the map dvd update disk for $7-$8 + shipping directly from any BMW dealer (I got mine from tischler). However, they are worthless without an FSC code (20-25 digit security code that is TIED to your VIN that the car asks you to enter when you insert the new map discs). Without this code, the car will not proceed with the update.
BMW is being really bad about getting this FSC code over the internet. They used to allow a dealer to sell it to you, but no longer allow. tischler bmw, etc, have all stopped this practice. They want you to go to your local bmw dealer and have them do the "install" for you. This basically means they acquire the FSC code and then use the DVDs to update your maps. Just this august, bmw raised the price for FSC code. In the U.S. it is now approx $300-$350! Most consider this to out and out rape. There is a company in Russia that claims to be able to acquire the FSC code for you (you give them VIN an disk info, they email you back to the code to enter). Good reviews, but not sure if i trust them... |
