Anyone replaced the exhaust tips on stock 35is exhaust?
Just wondering if they slip off or are they welded. Cyba has some ace tips available for a new look.

Vail, are you sure theyr'e welded and not riveted? Rivets can be drilled out, if that's the case. Mine is in storage, otherwise I'd look myself.

I've read multiple time that they were welded on but can not confirm myself as I have not personally looked.
I actually am seriously considering getting some Cyba tips as well, and I think a good follow up question would be if anyone knows what the diameter is for the inlet pipe to the stock exhaust tip is? Last edited by CedarZ4; 02-16-2014 at 05:58 PM.. |

they are welded on the 35i, and i bought a pair of cyba quad carbon tips last year. Each side has two tips connected to a Y pipe.
the reason why i havent had it installed still is that the shop needs to cut off a chunk of the stock exhaust to make the Y pipe fit. that includes the vacume pipes on the rear right. not a huge deal but not exactly plug and play.

Eventually I would like to go with a CF Rear Diffuser for Dual Exhaust tips. I do not have plans for changing out my OEM Exhaust system but would like a more aggressive look out back with bigger single exhaust tips or going with a double exhaust tip set up. I know I would have to trim heavily my OEM exhaust cut out in the bumper for the Double and I am OK with that. These are from Remus and are bolt on. Has anyone had any experience with these?

Can't speak for the tips themselves but Remus in itself is a good manufacture of exhaust systems, and a few members on here have not just the tips but axle-back system itself. So, quality should not be a concern.
Do be aware though that "bolt on" simply means it is uses a clamp to hold as opposed to welding, but would still require cutting of stock tips. |

Does anyone know what the purpose is of the valve after the muffler on the passenger's side? My old standby fabrication guys--Luftkraft Fabrication--are going to source some tips for me, but they say it would be much easier to get tips if I ditch that valve and just come straight off the muffler.
But before we cut off that valve, I'd like to know what it does. Is that what controls the burble in Normal vs Sport modes? Does it tune out low-RPM drone? Does it serve some kind of emissions function? |

It's a butterfly valve that is vacuum activated. As you mentioned, it closes at low RPMs to prevent droning on highway and reduce noise in city driving. It is pretty much a silencer. It opens up during WOT or RPMs at around maybe 3,000 to 3,500. It also helps reduce noise on start-up and possibly to help warm up the cats faster.
A lot of people "disable" this mod with the famous "Golf T Mod" If you remove it, you may experience drone (even with stock exhaust) on highway and as I've read, at around 2,000 RPM (but this is for the E90s). Not sure if it electronically monitored or if it will throw a signal if removed - doubt it as all aftermarket exhaust does without it but can not confirm. |
