Just to confirm
to open the Boot \ trunk using this PIN 12 - I need to supply 12 volts to it with a length or wire ? If so does it need to be connected constantly or just a momentary connection ? Your post doesn't mention |

Update to the saga
So I tried so hard to access the fuse box so I can trick pin 12 and pop my boot lid. But heaven only now what kind of being could contort themselves enough to even complete this task..
I have just dropped off my stricken z4 ( 27 miles of BONG! ) half built, to a local BMW specialist who have promised to have a good look at it. Maybe they will fix things.. One question which I have not been able to find an answer to: How do you put the roof in maintenance mode if the roof doesn't move ? |

Opening the boot is the easy part. The pin 12 trick or get someone with ISTA to do it. Once your in the trunk you will need to get to the CTM module and pull pins and temporarily wire in your new switch to trick the convertible top into working. This will allow you to put it into service position. Then you can replace the (2) microswitches, which is relatively easy. However, I agree with Robbi and think all this may be above your pay grade. So go to option 2.
Option 2: Many times these microswitches are somewhat intermittent. You may drive it a few days or weeks and magically it will start working again. Then quick take it into the garage, put it into service position and replace the microswitches, which is the easy part. My microswitch came back to life a few times before permanently failing. Option 3 - Take it to an indy garage and give them some of this sites info on how to repair. More than likely they have never done this before. You don't want them racking up several unnecessary hours for this repair. |

Sorry to drag up and old post...
...so the saga continues
The garage I left my z4 at back in December last year - still have it !! They are saying they can not get to the switch which is faulty AND BMW have told them the only way is to destroy the roof lining !! Is this right ? Apparently BMW just replace the roof lining when doing this repair !! They are now trying what Jarvis suggested - trick the CTM with the replacement switch though I think. |

I'm pretty sure, that each of the two switches IN the roof shell is ok and needs no replacement. Only the wires TO these switches will break after 6-10 years. Each E89 roof can be repaired in half a day. What the hell are they trying to do over 3 months? Quote:
Have a look at it: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=54_0397 Be cautious, this shitty piece of paper costs about 700€ (seven-hundred-euros)!

I hope nobody minds if I tack on to the end of this as my issues are quite similar. I have been reading up on this a bit before asking questions.
car is a 2012 E89 Error code '0692 microswitch, right rear end closed'. Roof still works but 'stutters' and almost constant red lights and bongs while driving now. The boot area is bone dry and always has been as far as I can see. I have examined the wiring around the dodgy bend behind the headrest and all of that looks brand new too. Salmon relays ordered but not arrived yet. I am not a qualified engineer type so is there anything else I should be thinking about doing myself? Also, Robby mentioned on another Z4 forum that I can not for the life me get registered on that you can turn off the annoying bongs! Anyone know how?? cheers, Hedders. |

Task #3: ⌛E89: Retractable Hardtop (roof) Maintenance (and additional) tasks https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=130932 You can pull the fuse of the amplifier to stop the bongs. But better to get these two microswitches replaced.

Thanks Robbi!
I figured I will replace the two relays as I can do that myself and, if (as we all probably suspect) that doesn't fix anything I will get the switches done by someone who knows what they are playing at. In the mean time i would like to silence the alarm. Could you please give me a little guidance on 'pulling the fuse from the amplifier'? I assume this is not the amplifier that also plays my music? Where is this fuse please? Hedders. |

So the garage I took my z4 to have admitted defeat and I am going to pick it up this week sometime.
Spoke to Mike at the Zed Shed in Warrington - booked it in this something I should have done last year... Also I found someone who recommended the Zed Shed to me he was able to stop the BONG by jamming a drawing pin down the side of the roof open button - apparently if the button is depressed it doesn't BONG. If this works its much easier than pulling the audio system fuse from the 'impossible to get to fuse box' Thoughts ? |

Removing 3 screws and pulling down the panel? It takes 2 minutes, if not less.

Yeah right.. I couldn't even get fuse box thing to come down on its crazy hinge thingy. There is obviously something I am not doing right.
However like I said instead of pulling the audio fuse - apparently jamming a drawing pin into the roof down switch might silence the BONG. A lot easier than pulling out the fuse ( as a temporary measure ).. no? |

lol yeah it seems there is a bit of 'smoke and mirrors' involved when working on these cars.
I am going to pick up my Z4 in about an hour from the garage which has had it for 3 months. Going to try the drawing pin idea ( to stop the constant BONG ) because next Monday I have 134 mile journey to the Z4 safe haven - Zed Shed Warrington |

Jamming the roof down button makes no difference to the chimes !!! BAH!
Now my rear quaters have gone down and they wont go back up - so now along with water in the boot I am going to have a puddle in the car too !! |
