No reason to correct people who are incorrect (even slightly) regarding an insignificant matter. They were just showing you they were aware you had a BMW. Not knowing exactly which BMW you had was unimportant to the conversation.

Why does this same question always get asked?
1. If it were the same, it would be listed under the M car lineup but it is NOT. 2. Who cares what others think? Just don’t go adding extra badges. Why? See #1. 3. Get the car you like and can reasonably afford. For a non-track car I never felt the need to pay up for the extras power, forged rims, big brakes or limited slip. But I do prefer the looks of the M sport trim over standard which is why I usually opt for that package. And yes for track, having M car is great because I’d spend more trying to retrofit many of those go fast parts or find creative ways to stuff wide rubbers. I saw a 440i with the m performance pack today. I had to do a double take. It has an m on the rear of the car. I'm fine with the cars that actually have an m in the model name, we can debate whether they're m cars. But the m performance pack with an m badge is not right.

Of course a M Sport is not even close to being a real M car.
Just had to add another useless affirmation to see how many pages we can stretch this topic to!! |

One point is that the 1M and OG M2 have the N54 and N55 respectively but they dont have "true" S type engines. Is it just the badge and price tag? Even the new M240xi has a diff now and the M3 powerdome. I dont like up badging but bmw continues to provide more and more //M division exclusive parts to m-lite versions.

An m240i/m340i are dynamically very much the same as a 230i/330i (they don't handle any better). An M3 on the other hand is a totally different handling experience.
