They forgot some other nomenclature:
L = long wheel base ActiveHybrid = sort of an 'i' hybrid but on normal cars d = diesel Z=roadster s (as in sDrive) = rear wheel drive for X cars with Range Extender = larger i3 battery |

None of these are new to the BMW lexicon, nor have they recently changed. I think that's what the clever blurb is hinting at.

Range Extender = one cylinder motorcycle engine in the right rear trunk to charge the battery on the go(on the i3). NOT a bigger battery.
