K AND N Air Filters
In place of replacing my OEM air cleaner with a cold air intake, which SEEM to have mixed revielws for N54 engine performanace upgrades, at a usually high cost ($600-$800) i am going to give a try with a K and N Air Filter upgrade over stock BMW.
Worst case is no performance changes, a life time, 1 time purchase, washable filter. Best case-some HP and performnace gain even if minor and barely noticable. I got the below filter from Bavarian Auto for $59.95. I will install it (in 2 minutes) this weekend. Any forum members with this minor upgrade and any performance related feedback IF ANY experienced? 2009 Z4-35i application K&N 33-2367 Replacement Filters List Price: $92.28 Your Price: $61.99 You Save 32.8% K&N's replacement air filters are designed to increase horsepower and acceleration while providing excellent filtration. Yes you'll never have to buy another air filter. but who wants to clean that thing and oil it?
Care to read this from BITOG? http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest1.htm I can save you some time - paper filters filter the best. That's what should be driving our decisions - Keeping the grit out of our engine oil.

actually, the worst case is you over oil it and damage something upstream, like air flow sensor
OP, I think OEM paper filter is the way to go, or perhaps another paper filter if you can find one that is validated to have better filtration |

I am still fairly new to these engines, but I don't think we have the type of air sensor in our cars that can be damaged by the oil. I agree that paper filters the best, but I anticipate frequent oil changes due to the low mileage I drive to counter act some of that. The filter is part of my planned upgrade path, otherwise I would stick with paper if I was staying stock or close to it. In the end, I think it depends on your situation and your goals and everyone's are different.

That's right - no mass airflow sensor in the N54.

yes fom K and N
Depending on your driving conditions, we recommend cleaning your air filter every 50,000 miles. To clean and re-oil, purchase our filter Recharger® service kit and follow the easy instructions. With the 3-4000 miles a year I drive, there will be many years of driving in between cleanings.

yeah you wont feel any difference. The ECU will auto tune out any gains as it is very strict with airflow.

I've heard / read of KN filters damaging MAP sensors as well. Unclear how much is fact vs. anecdote
As for goals, I've not seen intake or air filter actually be a meaningful power adder, but I could be wrong on that one. |
