Best advice I can offer is "if you drive an sDrive Z4 e89 then stay clear of 296 wheels, if you now have them then change them. For one day when you least expect it in some small town the TPM light will light up and what you will find is a cracked rear rim"
Should this happen to you then be prepared to spend at least 2 days in the small town motel waiting for replacement rim(s) and tire.

I've had one front and two rears go, all have been replaced recently and they're not the new design, so there are still plenty of old style wheels being refitted. One day I'll get something else but for now I'm saving pennies and loving the look of the wheels. |

damn just checked and i have the older type albeit without any cracks
looks like an easy way to check from the front is that there is no dip towards the centre in the modded ones, they are flat |

Having said that only the rears have been modified. The fronts are still the old design, I know as mine was replaced only a month ago. |

Well another set of 296's bit the dust @22,270 miles. Noted a screw laying under rear of the car this morning, looked too new and shiny to be off Z but was taking a glance under to make sure. So I just happen to spot what appeared to be the early stages of a crack on rear drivers side. Pulled it off and sure enough a crack. Figured I better check rear passenger side as well. Surprise, surprise that side has a single crack as well but more advanced. TPM not triggered & tires were still holding pressure @ 36 psi. The hook is on the way to haul it off to the dealer - not taking any chances exasperating the situation. Just inspected them @ 20K miles about 2 months ago with no issue.
Let the fun begin! Hopefully not much of a battle as I have the BMW Tire & wheel Insurance and caught the problem before they deflated and self destructed. Pasenger Side Driver's Side And away she goes

Regardless of whether you have wheel and tyre insurance, they should be replaced under warranty. There is a run out test and a tolerance limit of 2mm on the cracks. I have had 4 296 cracked wheels, and 3 changed free of charge under warranty. BUT...I now have a full set of 326 M Sport alloys, and two rears have cracked, but been replaced under warranty

Sorry VailM3, I have the same wheels as yours, the 326 M Sports......in the UK we have had 3 wheels crack, two of which have been rears on my car. Bth replaced under warranty. I don't think they crack as hard as 296 wheels as they are forged alloy, and the cracks have been way under the tolerance level

SA called to tell me the insurance agent approved two new wheels which are on order with an ETA tomorrow (Fri). Hopefully will get the new design wheels. RFT's will go in the trash soon as they are down to the last 2K miles or so. I could almost sense the tone that the SA would not have been so amiable without the insurance. Almost like he was disappointed in having to give me the wheels. He gave me a line of BS about the tires being unsafe and hitting the wear bars. Unfortunately for him I know the location and markings on the sidewalls for the tread wear indicators (TWI or Triangle) - Not there yet bud, which shut him up quickly. Remount the RFT's. Michellin PSS soon to be on order. So my initial 5 yr 50K mile @ $1200 Tire & Wheel Investment, has "Paid off in Full" & then some @ $2+K worth of hardware - two new rear tires at ~ 5k miles due to screws, two new wheels, and a total hassle free experience. So no complaints here.
It's just a real pity that it has to be this "insurance way" where owner's can't count on BMW engineering (failure to issue a safety recall), management (cognizant of engineering/supplier problems more concerned with $ loss control than customer satifaction), & the omnipresent accountants and lawyers (who create & defend the corporate $$ greed).
