2012 sDrive20i (N20 engine) Power Tuning?
I have a question that seems to be pretty hard to be answered.
I ordered my sDrive20i Z4 last week and it is being delivered at the end of march. However I only have the 184 bhp 20i version instead of the 28i with 250 bhp. Since it is the same engine I was wondering what possibilities I have to get the power up to around 250 bhp? Is the 28i just fitted with another mapping and more turbo pressure? Would be nice to get some tips. A chiptune is only getting me around 220 bhp from what I've read online? Last edited by Voytek; 01-30-2012 at 12:01 PM.. |

Yes it is the N20 engine...
I really want to know what the possibilities are... Standard it puts out 184 bhp and with a chiptune it goes up to 220. However since the N20 delivers 250bhp standard on the 28i, I wonder how to get pretty much the same HP from it? I would have gottem me the 28i version instead but it is very pricy to insure here in Belgium since I'm only 26 years old and the 28i also costs about 7000 EUR (9200 USD) more. Figured I was better of buying a 20i and performance tune it a bit. |

its too new to judge, u need to be patient for few months, once 3 series n20 hits the streets i'm sure tuners will have plenty of choices.

But what are the key differences between the 20i and 28i ?
Just the mapping and perhaps added turbo pressure? I see no reason why the 20i couldn't push to 250bhp ? |

My guess is a difference in boost is the biggest reason seeing as it's like a 70hp difference.
As far as the potential of the N20, it seems pretty good. http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=611684 |

The 28i has a physically bigger turbo than the 20i, limiting the amount of power increase you can get out of the 20i. For now, 220hp is what tuners are comfortable with for now. There's a limit to what you can get out of the small turbo. The bigger one can be tuned to almost 300hp.

I would say change your order and make it a sDrive Z4 28i
If there is still time to do it?

Allready placed the order and need to make sure insurance doesn't get crazy
Would it be possible to fit a bigger turbo? The one from the 28i since it is the only physical difference with the 20i engine? |

I am not sure, but the engine software will have differences, too. I am pretty sure that the modifications will be prohibitively expensive and definitely create uncertainties with your warranties and that for a brand new car. 220hp is probably the max you can reasonably assume to get out of the engine.

I don't know were you saw that the turbos were diferent....please check realoem..... The turbos are the same , every single part number of both cars is the same except for the brakes, larger on the 28i. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...87&hg=11&fg=50 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...87&hg=11&fg=50 |

That is very interesting. Same turbo's?
So what makes all the difference? Turbo pressure is higher on the 28i but how? A blow-off valve that keeps a higher pressure before releasing? If so it would be fairly easy to get bhp improvements? |

That's a very good post shotman. Given that I have the sdrive 20i i'm closely watching what superchips and other tuners can do
I'm also curious to know how much bhp my car puts out as BMW do seem to underrate their turbo models. I've gone pass the break-in period and will dyno it shortly. Hoping / expecting to see over 200bhp in stock config. |

So keep in touch with me psytse, I'm getting mine delivered in 5 weeks. We can share news if we get new info.
If the engine is pretty much the same I wonder how hard it can be to get around 240-250bhp at the crank. I don't really need 250+ or 300bhp like they can get the 28i to put out but around 240 would be ideal. |

I know ChuckB but since the engine is the same and even the parts from the turbo are exactly the same I was wondering what was giving the big difference in HP besides the mapping. I really hope I can safely 'push' my 20i to around 240-250bhp like the 28i comes from the factory.
That's all I want to know |

I also can't find any difference in construction between the 2 engines, but curious that there are 2 separate tunes. Did find a reference to the 20i running 11.1:1 compression and the 28i running 10.1:1 compression, then I found another source that they both run 10.1:1 compression, and that the management software is different. Not sure what to believe, but as the 28i hits the streets, I am sure more details will surface.
