HPFP ISSUE
HI everyone my car is an 09 and i'm still running the original fuel pump, of course i have my recall letter somewhere in a file, but the car had been so reliable that i did'nt feel the need to change anything. Now i am planning to drive the whole route 66 next summer back and forth some 6000 miles from Montreal. I feel scared to get stall in the middle of nowhere whit the engine on limp mode, on the other hand i dont want the dealer to touch the car and screw something else as is often the case. What do you think.

I think you should definitely change it out. The HPFP you have is a known problem and the one they will replace it with has been totally, completely reliable. Why risk it if you're going on a long trip?

What I trying to say is, what's the point of keeping a part which is known to be defective? They'll swap it out for a trouble-free part at no charge. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

If it aint broke, dont fix it.
Just keep the roadside assistance # handy.

I agree. If the pump has gone this long, chances are good you have one that is not going to fail and will have a normal life. As was mentioned, just keep the BMW roadside number handy and enjoy the nice trip.

+1 The mean time between failure rate of the older pumps was pretty bad. Although there are a good number of BMW dealers scattered throughout the states they are mainly situated around the larger cities. There is a lot of open spaces along Rt 66. The BMW techs and dealers have the change out down to a science. Why chance it?

I say change the pump. You got a recall notice. As Herrk said, there is a lot of open space out here in the West and response time and avaliability of a pump may cause you to loose a lot of time out in the middle of nowhere. I say do it now and not the week before you leave.

Don't change.
I have a bit of experinace with the N54.
Had and sold to coworker. 335i 40k 07, No HPFP issues. My buddys 335i 53k 07, No HPFP issues Brothers 335i 30K 08, some Fuel injector issue, but never left stranded. Brothers Friends 135i 40k, No HPFP problems to report My 135i 10 with 10 k miles No HPFP issues. My Z4 has N54 No HPFP issues. know of 1 other 335i driver personally, and he also has no HPFP issues. We are enthusiats who would notice and complain if issues. The internet makes the failures seem more common. PS all are manual transmission, not sure if its relevent. Yes many HPFP have failed. But they all don't fail, and those who don't have issues don't complain so the forum distorts the problems scope. To those who had problems or many problems, you have my sympathy. I would not change. The N54 HPFP failure rate is less than 1%.
if your car is subject to he recall, have it done. Otherwise do nothing and there is a 99% chance nothing will happen.
