Bluetooth for Music?
Hi, I just bought an E89 and I can't seem to figure out how to stream music from my phone via bluetooth. Is this not possible in a 2011 model? (I do have it synced for telephone already). TIA

i thought bluetooth audio came with bluetooth module update in 2010.
My 2009 car does not have it... so i have to use aux cable to connect to my phone. If im not mistaken 2011 should have bluetooth audio. it should be in the same menu where aux input and usb is located... click there on bluetooth to connect bluetooth audio.

Can I run the update myself or do I need to take it into BMW? Last edited by nomoracin; 10-12-2021 at 08:32 AM.. |

also... it could be a possible that your car was maybe sold and registered in 2011 but bluetooth module or combox came to cars with build date from 09/2010 if im right..
So if car was actually built before that and then sold at the dealer some time later like 01/2011 its possible it doesnt have bluetooth audio.

Not all Z4's are built equal!
Just because you have iDrive does not mean you have bluetooth streaming no matter what year it is. A very quick test.... if the upper left idrive controller button says "MEDIA" then you "should" have streaming, if it only says "CD" then you do not have the streaming ability. There are different modules fitted depending on what was spec'd from the factory (MULF, MULF/TCU, MULF2 or Combox).

He is talking about the rotary knob and buttons in center console next to the handbrake switch...
It has buttons for menu shortcuts like menu, radio, phone and nav on top and back and option buttons below... now top left button next to the menu button can have either CD or media written on it. Mine has CD written on it for example and i dont have bluetooth audio. Button must have media written on to have bluetooth audio option. Good trick this button label though... did not know that before.

Sorry, I was supposed to include photos there
As you'll see from the attached photos (and as explained by KennyP) one has CD and one has MEDIA (ignore the mounting surrounds on the controllers). They both do exactly the same job, it's just which modules are connected that makes the difference, and BMW would have fitted the MEDIA one with the Media package which includes the Combox (Connected Drive, USB Album Art etc)

Don't worry, you can still have integrated bluetooth streaming with your iDrive.
The Viseeo Tune2Air bluetooth receiver (ViseeO Tune2Air WMA3000B) works perfectly. I had one of these in my E89, before I retrofitted my iDrive, and it was great, I highly recommend them These, although are not cheap, are the only adaptors that interface with the BMW system so you can control them via the steering wheel buttons

Thank you so much!!! I was already limited to certain radio stations as I switched to the stubby antenna, so it's going to be so great to be able to stream music from my phone!!! |

No problem, glad it was of help to you. A bit cheaper than retrofitting a Combox!

I need just a little more information if you have time. My Z4 has an aux port and power adapter but know devoted usb port. Can the blue tooth device work using USB cord in power adapter slot? Much appreciated and Thanks in advance, Hampton

Sorry but the Tune2air has to have the OE USB port for it to work properly. The AUX port simply carries the music whereas the USB is responsible for data transfer (music data and skip function control). Without that you might as well just use any cheap Bluetooth module.

You just need a carplay module, trust me,best solution ever.
Only cost less than $250. It brings bluetooth phone by the way.Carplay with e89 looks like a modern model even it worked over 10 years. |

depending on when your car was build you might not be able to stream audio only bluetooth calling. you can retrofit this but you would have to install a combox. something like this. https://www.bimmer-tech.net/category...ombox-retrofit
Not worth it in my opinion. I ending up installing the wakka MMI interface which was $250 and it retains the factory screen and gives me CarPlay which takes care of everything I need. |
