Rear Shock Replacement
My 4 year extended warranty expires on Monday (3 days from now). I was able to get it out of storage early to run it over to the BMW dealer to give it a "courtesy" check. Wasn't aware of any problems but thought it worth while to have them check it out.
Glad I did. Tranny is leaking somewhere. Even though they couldn't work on it and diagnose properly until next week a call to the third party extended warranty folks said they would cover it. $100 deductible is looking good! Anyway they also said rear shocks may be leaking. Won't know for sure what is going on with them until next week. It's the adaptive M suspension so shocks are going to run over $300 each if I purchase and install. (Dealer says there is an outside chance that the warranty will cover but I doubt it) So... has anyone installed rear shocks? How difficult a job is it? |

Just had my rears replaced under warranty. $650 each parts, and shipping from Germany, because - of course they are.... 37k miles....trim panels are a PITA in general, but big hands....

Extended warranty did cover the DCT leak but didn't cover the rear shock.
Dealer asked me if I wanted to do a fluid exchange/flush as long as they were in the tranny. All I would pay is for the fluid since labor was already there on the repair. At first I thought might as well pop for the $250. Then figured they would have to replace fluid anyway so I said I'll pass. Final details of repair included 8 liters of DCT fluid. Tranny holds 8.4 liters so I think I pretty much got my flush for no additional out of pocket. $100 deductible and I'm on my way. |

Love good warranty stories.
The one I has on my Z4 was great. The one I had for my X5 was useless and it was there "platinum" version! The X5 small print was "component" replacement. So for example, my transfer case was slipping and needed repaired/replaced. BMW service doesn't "repair" anything as we know - they replace. So it was a no-go to have BWW svc work on the transfer case. So, the plan for my warranty was supposed to be this: - Pay a shop to remove the transfer case and take it apart and diagnose what needed replaced (clutch disks, actuator motor, etc) - Warranty would pay for the clutch disks (cheap) - Pay the shop to put it all back together Even if I was willing to do all that, who has a local shop that knows enough about BMW transfer cases that they would take on the job?! *Bought a rebuilt one for $1300 and installed it myself. |
