The e89's front is more coherent, but the e85's rear seems sportier. The duckbill at the end really sets the e85 apart...
Definitely a game changer in 2002 or whenever the z4 first arrived.

The e86 is the best looking BMW in its era and I actually didn't care at first too much for the e89 because I was looking for a sedan at first (go figure). I think that the new Z4 improved in the front while the old Z4 looks better in the rear. I didn't like that the new one grew in size and was heavier and didn't care about convertibles at first and would have preferred a real coupe. However, the looks grew on me and overall I personally think that the new one looks slightly better than the e86 (which I prefer over the e85). The e89 is the best looking BMW in its era.

Agree, I see them as two different cars, in handling, on the road...
I love the e89 front and the e85/86 rear. They don't offer a combo the germs... Quote:

Nice post! Why do I like the older one more? The new one is definitely more flashy (especially from the front), but if I were given a choice to pick between the two I would without hesitation pick the older one. I prefer its smaller size, rear end, and more sport oriented engine and suspension. Maybe when the E89 becomes more ubiquitous and the older models start to be scarce on the road, my preference might adjust to the E89, but right now I still prefer the older roadster (particularly the Z4M model) to the newer one.

I love the new E89 look from the front, but I prefer the tail lights of the E86...
HOWEVER, the main difference is convertible HARD top!!! that makes my decision for E89 =D |

I agree on both accounts. I would not have bought the older model due to the soft top and the smaller size.

I've owned both and there's no doubt the new one turns a lot more heads than the old one did. And based on the comments from friends and strangers alike, it's not just because it is newer. The E89 is a stunning looking car whereas the E85 has always divided opinions (I took even me some time to learn to love its looks). The E86 is a looker too, but since it's not a roadster there's no point comparing.

Just curious how many of those who loved the old (2003 - 2008) Z4 instead of the 2009+ have now jumped ship? I was torn. At this point, there isn't too much of a price difference between an 08 and 09, so I could have gone either way. Both had pluses and minuses for me, but in the long run, I opted for the simplicity and "rawness" of the E85. I just felt a bit more alive driving it. Less electronics I guess. I already have enough if that in my other cars and they are a total pain when they fail, so I gave into simplicity.

The new one looks far better to me. It has more elegant lines, where as the old one... well, has lines all over the place, that make no sense to me. The rear of the E85 with those pre-facelifted lights and that curve on top of the trunk looks just nasty. If you look at it from the side view, the rear looks like someone has choped it off. The front is the only part of the car that I like, but still not perfect. However I do like the look of the E86 Z4 coupe, the hard top suits the car way better and that curve on top of the trunk is nicer. Handling wise I prefer the E85, it is a bit sharper compared to the new one. And yes I own a E89 so I will appear to be biased. But I really hated the design of the E85 since day one when it came out and was drooling when I first saw the E89. Just my personal opinion.

Well, I'm not biased at all. I own an e89 but prefer the lighter and smaller e86. The side of the old coupe was probably the best angle for the car; I prefer the old rear lights to ours. Our car is as big as a Civic sedan, no idea why a 2 seater is as long as a 4 door sedan! Yes, our interior is obviously more updated and the engines are generally better, but I prefer smaller, nimbly cars.

I had a 2006 Z4M Roadster. I now own a 2011 Z4 35iS.
I far prefer the newer model. It is just more up to date, seems better made. The handling though is better on the older model. I prefer the tin top and ventilation of the newer model. I felt the heater in winter was not up to the job of keeping the occupants warm when it was cold with the roof down whereas the newer model has a much more powerful set up (or so it seems). The seats in the newer model are far more comfortable (not that the old one was bad). I just think the older Z4M was more hardcore for me than the 35iS ... Maybe I am just getting old lol |
