You don't need to insert the key into the slot in order to start the vehicle, at least in my vehicle. Although, inserting the key fob into the slot does charge the key, among other things.

Thanks,Dave The BMW distributors in China don't know the answer, because the car sales in China are not comfortable Z4, only can be customized to enter this function, so they don't know, I was very confused when DingChe, do not know to want to order this function, because vendors said there is probably still need to insert keys, thank you, now I know!

My euro Spec 30i Key Fob has a battery [CR2032] in it, which has so far lasted since May 2009, so no need to charge to remote or ever take it out of your pocket, not sure if the difference is another US vs Euro thing or if the difference is based upon the options.

Welcome to the forum !
yes do keep your key in your pocket, here and then you need to insert it to charge it of course (I charge mine on long trips) Looking at your Signature ... Quite right about price in China ... I saw my wheel in China costs almost $2000- I am so glad my wheel cracked in the USA where I only payed $606- US Looks like I never ever bring my car to China ... perhaps I should and sell it there ... nah just a joke.

Unless there's an international difference the Comfort Access keyfob has a replaceable battery as ChuckB mentions. The CA does store the driver's preferences and maintenance codes when inserted in the dash but it doesn't charge. The non-CA keyfob has a rechargable battery that recharges in the dash.

According to the dealer, the CA version does charge as well when inserted.

As noted, according to the dealer it does. I'm simply repeating what he told me when I asked him. Perhaps it is a Canadian thing (hence my entry of CA, vs. Comfort-Access CA).
When I get a moment, I'll open up the fob and see if the battery is a "CR" type. It also stores seating position, mileage information and all sorts of other goodness for the SA to see. Dave

Page 36 in my manual states that the battery is 'replaceable' not 'rechargeable'.

You're absolutely correct. And on page 26 it says:
"Each remote control contains a rechargeable battery that is automatically recharged when it is in the ignition lock while the car is being driven. Use each remote control at least twice a year for longer road trips in order to maintain the battery's charge status. In vehicles equipped with Comfort Access, the remote control contains a replaceable battery, refer to page 34." (the page you referred to). I'm simply saying that my SA at the dealership advised me that even though I had the comfort access option, my remote still required a charge. I haven't been able to open the 'door' on the key fob per the manual instructions on how to change the replaceable battery, implying there may not be a replaceable battery in mine and that it gets recharged when I plug it in - and I definitely have comfort access on my z. So perhaps the combination of a rechargeable key fob and comfort access is a Canadian 'feature'? Or a build error on the line? Who knows. Dave

Ok.. Excuse my ignorance here... Can someone explain to me why is it hard nowadays to pickup the key from your pocket, place it in its slot and push the start button!!!
Or does the CA have some other functions? Like turn on the car from distance? Put on the heater/heated seats ON/Turn on the Air-condition?? etc... |

You do not need a CA to open and close the roof from the outside... My E93 did not have the CA and I was able to open and close the roof, windows, side mirrors from the outside... I am assuming the Z4 is the same??
I still did not yet get my car, Custom ordered it in OCT won't be getting it until April 2011.. I must have been F***in' high when I did that!!! |

I had an E93 and it was NOT standard !! I had to pay for the comfort access option to be able to open the top from outside as well as use the other hands free options. It cost me $500.00 !! ANd it wa sand is well worth the added cost !!

I have CA. No need to insert the key. Can close or open the hard top by pressing the buttons of the key.
You may not know, in mainland China, the salesman mostly not reliable. So you have to ask BMW directly.
