Well just when you think it wouldn't get worse...
So I've been procrastinating with writing this post but I finally found some down time.
So back on Aug 16th I took a summer Friday and left midtown Manhattan at 1:30. This would end up being my longest commute ever. After taking an hr and half to travel a few avenues just to get to the entrance of the the midtown tunnel I found that it was closed coming from my direction. Unwilling to pop u-turn and jump into another line to get to the mid town tunnel I decided to try the Queens borough bridge. This turned out to be even worse. Little did I know but at the time there was a truck fire on bridge which was causing this commute from hell. I literally sat in traffic for another hour just to turn around. On the bright side it was a nice day, and while I was waiting for traffic to move I had quite a few thumbs ups from fellow drivers. At one point a group of mothers were walking with their kids and they stopped to stare in awe. One of the mothers politely shouted, "He loves your car!!", pointy to her son. After a bit of an ego boost I finally made it to moving traffic on the westside and made my way to the lower east side to hop on the Williamsburg bridge. My free sailing was short lived as I ran into more gridlock. This time I tried my luck, and ended up taking local roads all the way from Brooklyn to Floral Park, Long Island. So remember I mentioned leaving at 1:30? I got to my area, about a mile from my house around 545!! Mind you on a regular summer Friday this would be a 20-30 min commute. So here it goes. About a mile from my house and I say to my self, hmmm maybe I should get a car wash before I go out tonight. On the way to the car wash, about 1/2 mile from my house, An elderly driver facing the opposite direction decides he would rather pull out in front of me to make the light instead of waiting for oncoming traffic to pass. So here are some pics of the aftermath... |

Thank God insurance covered it and I got enough back to pay off the car and put money down on a new one. Dealer said it should arrive on the 9th and the. A few days to finish up last minute details.

Damn. That sux, but at least you're getting a new one out of it.
How fast would you say you were at the point of impact after you had time to react and hit the brakes?

Glad you are ok and good thing you were in a car and not say.. a motorcycle...
By the way, doesn't going local from Williamsburg Bridge to Long Island take you through Bed-Stuy and Bushwick? Not sure I would drive through those areas in any car, let alone top down in an E89 |

Thank God no one was hurt. Airbags deployed, the knee protection is great. I walked awaywith minor sprains on both wrists. Im 230 and braced for impact with both hands on the wheel. At the end its just a car but I'm happy it was replaced. BMW financial and Gieco we're both great in resolving everything. And thank you everyone for your comments! I should be picking up my 2014 on the 16th!!! |

They actually kept to themselves, no apologies, no hey are you ok. Worst part he tried to say I was speeding, but I was only doin 30 to 40.
When we hit they actually pulled my car with them. If I was really speeding I would have pushed them of their path, not vise versa. But the law and the insurance saw I was the victim, thank God. Fun fact. At the seen the car was surrounded by fireman and police officers. Car got a lot of compliments and sympathy. Mean while the elderly couple were off to the side alone... |

I'm surprised they totaled the car.
Pending on options, but a 2013 35is with 3k miles I would think should go for at least $50k - $55k+ Most important though is that you and everyone involved was ok. And on the bright side, you got a new LCI car Last edited by CedarZ4; 10-03-2013 at 07:55 PM.. |

Isn't the rule for totaling a car damage that is more than 1/2 it's value? if the car was frame damaged and basically needs an entire new front clip, including interior trim and airbags I could see how that hit would be $25k-$30k in parts and labor ?

Rant on:
That just kills me. I don't mean to be an ageist but I live in a neighborhood that is transitioning from older (retired) couples to young professional families. Walking my dog is down right dangerous as the elderly blow through stop signs, don't look before turning etc. At the local store we've had 3 incidents in the last year of Elderly drivers mistaking the gas for the brake pedal, ripping through the parking lot to smash into other cars and the store itself. I understand the psychology behind the reluctance to give up the license but come on.. We need stricter laws with regards to obtaining and keeping driving PRIVILEGES (it's not a right). I'm not sure if it's just my state or not but once you attain your license you are never tested again. We should have to pass a driving test that is specific to your age group throughout life. How many times have you witnessed peoples driving and wondered "how the hell are you still on the road?!" Rant off. |
