Navi iDrive Retrofit
First off I wanted to say hi to everyone. I've just placed an order for a 35iS and I'm already regretting not ordering the iDrive / Navi system.
So my question is if its possible at all for me to retrofit the Navi/iDrive unit into the car myself if I order it strait from the dealer. I've seen this done on a X3 over on the other forum but I can't seem to find any info on the E89 having this done. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Appreciate the help!

Retro fit is gonna be a PITA. I'm pretty sure you have until production to change your order.

Thanks guys for the advice, the only thing is the country where I am at has an 100% tax on luxury cars and getting the navi with idrive will cost me a good USD8k (I assume this option cost 4k elsewhere in the world)
For 8K I would probably just go ahead and place the order the new boxterS instead. If i order the parts in and install it myself it would be about half that as the tax does not apply on parts ordered separately. I just cannot justify myself paying this much for something so basic, I really don't need the navi, I really just want something that displays my playlists and songs properly. I personnally feel that a car in this price range would come standard with at least a screen as even the 1 series does, which is the modern thing to do, so needness to say I'm quite disappointed. I think even a camery has a built in screen in their dash now!

Btw, the BMW 1 doesn't come with screen/iDrive standard. At least not in the US.

So all in all how much would a new setup run me? Is it even possible to integrate? I'm guessing it's a bit more complicated and hooking up different connectors and voila then putting everything back like how they are supposed to be?
What are my other options you would think? Aftermarket wise

- main unit: $1,200 - display unit: $2,511 - controller: $253 - enable code: $300 - GPS antenna: $100 - trunk lid cover: $50 - coding: $350 - misc: $250 So overall, if you do it yourself, it will cost you $5,000 for all parts at spare part pricing. Maybe they can help you with a cheaper set.

given the high cost of the project and the possibility of total failure I guess I will just have to give it a pass.
What else can I put in there?

Hi all, I just wanted to ask about this myself, I found these guys offering a full retrofit.
Anyone got experience with this? http://bimmerretrofit.com/store/inde...&product_id=56 Hopefully it can just drop into the storage bin in the dash and centre console! Obviously with the appropriate electronics mods. |

Do not, try and do a retrofit, you will end up with MUCH more hassles than it is worth. If it costs around $5000 for parts and what not, spend the extra and get it installed in the vehicle from the factory.

i.e. When I asked if I could simply replace the storage bins, all the answer I got was 'some modding is required' and they refused to be any clearer. Frankly given the costs I'm not risking it based on a vague statement like that. Their loss.... |
