I know for a fact (for my car at least) that Petro-Canada gas made the whining noise. I've switched to Esso for the longest time and never had another episode again.

I am now on the 4th fuel pump, counting the one it came with. The latest one has been quiet for about a month. The two previous ones were fine at first but started the high pitched tone after about 6 mo of use. I was surprised the last time that BMW chose to just put another one in instead of doing something more radical. Fortunately there are 2 1/2 years of warranty remaining for them to hopefully find a permanent fix.

If he's talking about the in-tank pump, that's not a HPFP is it? Unless HPFP means High Pitch Fuel Pump
Mine got quieter after a software update, but now about a year later it's getting embarrassingly and annoyingly loud again. |

High pitch fuel pump it is! Just had mine replaced after a year of putting up with it and it's quiet for now but after reading this, it probably won't be for long.

I had mine replaced two years ago and have never had a problem since. You should be okay.

Actually, I was just thinking. Even though some of us no longer have prbs w/ this noisy LPFP, some of us have had to make 'concessions', e.g. avoiding a certain gas brand, remembering not to have more than 1/2 or 1/4 tank empty, etc.

Yes, you are correct. Since I have had mine replaced, I have never let the gas tank get below 1/4 and most of the time fill it back up when it is 1/2 or slightly below. I cannot recall where I got the info that this may have been the cause. I have had the high pressure and low pressure replaced. The high pitched whining sound coming from the rear is the LPFP. I never experienced any problems with the HPFP, but they replaced it because of the recall.

I only fill past 1/2 tank when I'm on a road trip. The ~50lbs less weight in fuel helps to compensate for my fat ass....the 500bhp helps too.

True, when I had the problem, it also did not make a difference how full the tank was either. I was told that it my be beneficial not to allow the tank to get much below a half tank. Anyway it has been two years since I had it replaced and no problems no matter how much gas I have in the tank.

Back in the day, when your pump was making noise, there was some rumors flying around that BMW's fuel level sensors were contributing to the HPFP failures due to the split tank. I recall I suggested keeping your tank full to see if the humming would go away. I was wrong, but that's a good thing because no one wants to have to deal with that all the time. BMW came up with a good, long-term solution.
As a general rule, regardless of make/model filling at around a 1/4 tank is good idea for the life of your in-tank fuel pump, however. Cheers

Our 2009 has the hum now. Went away for awhile and perhaps the warmer temperatures have brought it back - 77 degrees now.
Anyone have an update on their experience with BMW's recent replacement policies with the LPFP? Have 5 months left on warranty. |

Took our 2009 Z4 in for the in tank fuel pump noise, and the dealer replaced it under warranty. They told me that there was a bulletin that provided they should replace the fuel pump if the customer complains of noise. I was very happy to hear that BMW had taken this position. I was surprised to learn that there is a large access port in the tank that unscrews and allows access to the in tank pump and fuel filter (also in the tank under the fuel pump).

I've had this same exact problem, but for an M54 engine E85. I think this is a problem for all Z4's. I was told since i wait until the gas light comes on, bmw tank pumps don't work well and wear out faster unless the pump is always swimming in gas.
Moral of the story, 3/4's is when i fill it up. |

My dealer also replaced the low pressure pump back into 2009 because of a 'humming' noise. After a couple of months the noise returned and disapeared again.
At the moment, ~55000 Km later the noise is in rare occasions noticeable. |
