Sounds GREAT Eugene thanks for helping me out with the mod. Very noticeable difference going from 1K rpm up to 3k

I didn't try it after we spoke, but yes I'm pretty sure it has Launch Control.

Muffler delete is the way to go, i did mine with some nice slanted tips, car sounds amazing, not too loud and not silent. Cold start is a little loud but overall car sounds badass. All for less then a 100 bucks

my car is a used 2010 3.5i DCT. Since I bought it a few months ago, I noticed some weird mechanical noise from time to time but I read some posts saying newer BMW always had some weird noise and so I didnt pay any attention. Once, I stepped the gas to floor during a spirit drive up a sloped road using full automatic shifting in sports mode, and I noticed the rpm fluctuated slightly but noticeably enough. It felt like something was holding back the rpm. First, I thought it might be a software problem of my ESS ECU upgrade. After some research, I decided to golf tee the exhaust following these posts. All noise problem and rpm holding back seems to be got now. After a month try, I also felt though I may be wrong that some if the acceleration hesitation problem got too. However, the car seems to take longer to warm up.

If you experience "something" holding back the rpm it is most likely traction control kicking in! You should see a yellow light flashing in the dash when it happens. I think the OEM tires don't make much noise when wheelspin is present so you might not notice unless you look at the dash. Have you seen the flashing yellow symbol I am talking about? If you floor it, especially with ESS, you will probably experience wheel spin at most speeds below 80kmh unless the road surface is top notch. And in normal/sport mode the traction control is so aggressive that you might not hear or even feel the rear tires break traction. |

It was neither DSC nor DTC holding it back. I drove an old E85 then a E89 in total of 6 years to know how it felt when DSC intervened. Although I may sound soft in writing, I am a nut when driving my Zee. I push it so hard that DSC kick in quite often. Here in Hong Kong, it rains quite often in summer and my way home is steep slope up, and my rear wheels slip often.
The golf tee definitely made the car sounded deeper at low RPM, especially at starting up the car. Even my wife knows nothing about car but has very good musical ears, she could hear the louder, deeper exhaust - I didnt tell her in advance. What I meant was I believed the exhaust flap was not functioning properly. For the last few days, without looking at your reply, I connected back the hose to the acutator to reactivate the flap, and the old problems came back. BMW should have designed the flap more sophisticatedly, for example, bearings to the rotating axis of the flap. Last edited by shlai; 11-12-2013 at 08:42 AM.. |

I will try to upload a video to show you the noise the flap was making when I shoke the push rod connecting the flap and the actutator. It was exactly the same as the rattle noise when putting the car to Park and applying gas quickly. Dont forget the entire exhaust system vibrates when the engine is running, pushing exhaust out. The vibration increases in frequency and magntiude with sudden change in RPM. Such vibration makes the flap rattle. If the flap is not designed durable enough, it will still function but with noise and a decrease in reliability, ie, it may not close or open fast enough or completely enough. In fact, small carbon particles in the exhaust gas can probably kill the rotating joint of an exhaust flap with frequent spirit driving
