Hey all..
My AW 35is came in yesterday and should be ready for my delivery tonight...right before the storm hits Anyhow, the car sounds pretty damn good, I just would like to hear it with a bit more tone at idle or when excellerating. Do any of you guys know of any trick I can do with the exhaust for little to no money? And no...Im not wanting to replace the whole damn system LOL Any help would be great |

On a more serious note, I picked up my 3.5is 4 wks ago in Miami and drove 19hrs home to Tennessee and I did an easy mod to the exhaust before I even left Miami that makes a big difference. The passenger side tailpipe has a valve in it that is closed at idle and lower rpms to meet sound regulations that some countries have. It then opens at 3000 rpm or so and it gets louder. All you have to do is disconnect a small black vacuum tube that connects to a valve that is connected to the tailpipe about 6 inches from the tip. Just look under the car at the passenger tailpipe and it will be very easy to see. You then put a screw or golf tee into the tubing and I put some black electrical tape around it to keep it in and covered the valve nipple with tape to keep water out. Takes about 2 minutes and makes a noticeable difference.

Your driving style impacts the noise produced.
If you are about mid aggressive on the throttle - and lift off just on change up, you can regularly produce loud blarping noises from yoru stock exhaust. A small amount of practice and you can do it on commmand on the 1-2 and 2-3 upchanges. The kids at my local school love it, and I am a small enough child inside my mind to keep doing it as well. More practice and you can extend how long you produce the blarp noise - I have managed to make it last about 10 seconds with fine throttle control. And apologies if this blarp has a well established technical name.

CANFLAP!!
You can do the golf tee mod, I personally have the JB4 which allows you to open/close it via steering wheel controls.

Will try this technique and get back to you. I had a 135, and did the golf tee trick and it was a noticeable difference. Just didn't think that our cars had the vaccum hose as well....GOOD TO KNOW |

Pull the short rubber vacuum hose between the valve and the flap actuator. (it is "S" shaped under the rear bumper) Cover each end nipple with carb vacuum caps (you can find on amazon or ebay - search on "Holley vacuum line caps". This will give you more rumble and it's easy to put back if you are worried about BMW service folks.

I have had this mod for a month and have not noticed any rough idle or at any other rpm on my 3.5is. Hopefully it won't show up later.

No problems here, and I've have the mod for a year. Some use the "golf tee" to do the same mod. The sound at idle might have a bit more "rumble" but it isn't rough. I'm not sure how opening the flap at the tail pipe would cause the engine to run rough at idle - the required back pressure is created much further up.

I did this quick mod this evening... Emm... I am not sure if I do hear the difference, ok maybe kind of 3-5% louder when driving below 3,000 rpm (compared to before the mod).
The first time I turned on the car, I was pressing on accelerator to get the rpm above the 3,000 it wouldn't go.. Stayed idle at 3,000 and then went down to 2,500 even if my right leg was floored on the pedal. I figured out that the can flap is closed. So took the car for a drive and this opened it up, and it remained open. One major thing i noticed, and that kind of piss me off, there is no more this loud blarping noises that the car used to produce whenever you were shifting gears timely (see Dr. Stig 2 comments, mainly downward)... Did anyone notice that as well? I will leave it with this simple mod for few days before deciding if I am going back to the OEM position (I love this loud blarping noises)... |

Can you guys take a picture of where that rubber thing is located?
Edit: Just read the above post, if it doesn't make the "blarping" noises at shifts, it's a no go for me. I love that sound too much lol.

The blarping comes from the fact that the can flap semi close on each down gearing... But after the mod, the can flap is always open to the max. How can you still have this blarping sound ?? |

it is not caused by the exhaust flap but by the back pressure of the exhaust i have tested it again and again and its there
