Cybercab

I saw the Cybercab tonight on road. I was on my was from 5th St to Terry Blacks BBQ. The Cybercab was stopped at a light while we were making a right turn. I am not sure if anyone else has seen these on the road yet, but it looked interesting.

I'm not sure if it's possible to take a bigger pass than the one I'd take on this.

This is the 6th year that there are going to be a million of their robotaxis on the road, so it's about time that one's been spotted

Did it have a safety chase car?

Not sure what good a chase car does, I don’t wanna be anywhere in front of the cyber cab…or in it for that matter.

I have 4-5 self driving cars in my neiborhood at least. Waymo being the most popular one being used by Uber. Interesting point is the self driving cars cost the same to use as a human driver. The newer brands awaiting approval to drive by themselfs, put a person in the drivers seat as the car drives around. I had one of these cars behind me yesterday at a light. No chase cars though.

Owned a model S few years ago. The build quality on a 100k+ car was below par. Way too many empty promises from him on self driving, range and customer service, etc. I wouldn’t trust anything anything with a Tesla badge

If it’s anything like Model 3 I had for 9 months, I’d make sure to stay far away. The rattle alone will deafen your ears.

Wife had a 2014 model S (pre-autopilot).
i had a 2015 model S (autopilot 1.0).
Wife currently has a 2024 Model 3 with FSD. major reason she got it was because they let us transfer over the lifetime free supercharging from the 2014 to the new car.

the FSD was 🐩💩for the first year we had the car, but now it's getting very usable. i live in the santa cruz area and have a 35 mile commute over highway 17 (a very curvy freeway through the mountains that separate santa cruz from silicon valley). Even in pouring rain, i've been able to engage FSD in my driveway and not disengage until i get INTO MY COMPANY'S UNDERGROUND GARAGE.

i don't think it's good enough yet to not pay attention at all times (let alone let it manage without a driver), but i no longer think they will never achieve it. i refuse to give that man credit for anything, but tesla has come a long way in their self driving skills.

the cyber cab will definitely do some newsworthy blunders in the first year, but i think it will soon be at a competitive level with waymo.

"According to a 2024 survey conducted by Waymo, 85% of female respondents cited the absence of a driver as a key reason for preferring autonomous taxis over rideshare services."

They will never achieve FSD with a safety record equal to a multi sensor system such as the one in use in Waymo. And Tesla will deal with lawsuits for decades to come until they rework FSD to incorporate multiple sensor technologies. Relying on a camera system alone is inferior and impossible to make safe*.

*[I used AI to summarize a list of companies that use sensor fusion here] Camera-Only vs. Sensor Fusion: Almost all other competitors, including Waymo, Cruise, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo, and Ford, use a "sensor fusion" approach. This combines cameras with radar and LiDAR to provide redundancy, which is widely considered necessary for high-level autonomy.

Tesla is the only company (besides possibly one chinese company) that insists on a camera only system. How many people will have to die before Elon admits he's wrong.

They’re just testing self drivers up here. I try to avoid Seattle proper, but with a daughter-in law in Ballard, I find myself driving I-5 thru the length Seattle, and then 10 miles west to Ballard.

Based on the scrunched corner, swiped sides, and broken rear view mirrors I see, the bar for safety is pretty low here for most driving. I’m sure the survey comments about having a driver could have included here too.

My biggest issue with a Tesla cybercab or whatever is that I fundamentally don't trust Tesla as a company. I have zero faith in Elon not just telling engineers that they're wrong and shipping a partially-working, unsafe product. FSD is a great example of this – for more than a decade it's been promised to be coming "soon," despite the company knowing that it wasn't even close. All the while collecting money from customers paying for the promise. I almost wonder if they know it's never going to happen on any of their cars currently on the road or being sold and the recent change to charging $99 a month for it isn't a way to get people not to buy it. $1,200 a year is ludicrous for any feature.

Tesla has been shown to lie to their customers about range, about their FSD software's shortcomings and faults, actively denying customers' reports to the point of being told not to pick up the phone when they call, etc., etc., etc. I simply don't trust them not to outright lie if the facts are in opposition to Elon's ego or delusions. This is, after all, the same guy who ordered Twitter's engineers to change their algorithm so that his account got more followers and likes.

He keeps lying and shipping beta software so he doesn't have to issue refunds, and to maintain the image of a visionary creator, upon which his over inflated wealth is built.
