Word from a dealer - there WILL be an //M
Just spoke to my dealer. I don't want to start another speculation thread, here is what he says:
He insists Z4 M will eventually be made. Obviously, as these high end models tend to arrive later in lifecycle it is approx. 3-4 years away. However, it is not being prepared yet. BMW is now saying there won't be one to make well-off early adopters buy the current 35i and than switch to an M model later on. Old news is that due to emission regulations, the M will get a blown inline 6. I think we can expect 380-400hp and 450Nm. |

Unless your dealer has inside information it is - however - completely useless and not worth opening a thread for it. |

I know. The dealer said the source is really somebody inside BMW. He got the info when they were receiving some kind of technical training for the new Z4.

Knowing how the decision process in big companies tends to shift from one decision to the exact opposite in short time frames I currently believe that no one can really tell whether there will be an M. I think it will also depend how long the economic crisis will last, how well the 35i will sell (meaning do they see a need or a niche big enough) and and and... So for now, speculation is all we have (no matter how close to BMW the source may be). |

I was reading an article on carpoint.com.au about the 09 z4 and I remember it seemed to suggest that there will be an M. I really do think eventually there will be one as BMW need an 'M' champion to head their line a la Benz's SLK AMG.

The N54 is a great engine (I have a 135i) but for a sports roadster I would prefer in all honesty a powerful high revving NA engine a la M3. Jumping from my 135i into my Lotus (which doesnt even have a particuarly exotic engine set-up) I can tell an immediate improvement of throttle response. Makes driving more fun. Turbos have their applications. I hope that BMW has tweaked the N54 throttle in the Z4 35i. We shall see..

I would like an M version, and I really prefer the normally aspirated V8 power in my M3. That being said, I would take a little less power if they would give us a lighter car with exceptional balance, braking and handling ala Boxster! That is the car we need to compete against, not the Benz.
I think with performance mods there may not be enough of a market for an M version, although there certainly are folks who who would by one, me included! |
