Goodbye Cayman S Hello Z4 35is
Hi All,
So after careful consideration, I decided it was time to say goodbye to my beloved 2006 Cayman S. She was a wonderful car, but several factors pushed me towards a change. The Caymans S was an amazing car. It was the most responsive, agile, pure and raw car I've owned. It handled like a go cart and gave me the confidence to be a better driver than I am. It was a pure driving car that demanded to be driven and required work to get the most out of it. However, for everyday driving to work or around on the weekends with the wife, it was a rough-riding and loud car with a lackluster interior. It's exterior was beautiful, but inside it was all go and no show. The Cayman S is one of the best drivers cars in the world, no doubt. On a track or twisty road there are few rivals. However, if it's your only car and you don't actually take advantage of it's capabilities, you're left with (do I dare say) a pretty mediocre daily driver. I would love the cayman as a second car, but that's just not in the cards at the moment. So on to the search for a new car. My criteria were: Luxury - The car needed to have luxury features. My wife recently got a new EX35 suv and honestly, I was a bit jealous of all the gadgets. Looks - the car had to instill the same passion in me that the Cayman did. Fast - The car had to be fast. Rare - I like my cars to be a bit different than others. The Cayman was nice it this regard Topless - I used to own a E46 M3 Convertible. Loved that car. Automatic - Wife doesn't drive stick and it would be nice if she could drive my car occasionally. Price - Car needed to be in the low $40's or less Warranty - Car needed to have at least two years of warranty left on it. With all these criteria, there was really only one option. The Z4 35is. Is it a pure sports car like the Cayman S? Of course not. But it has so much more usable/accessible speed compared to the Cayman. It is lightyears ahead in the luxury dept. It's stunning to look at and the wife can drive it. I'm sure there will be times when I will miss the Cayman, but for where I am in life, the Z4 35is is the right car for me. Hello Beautiful! Goodbye Cayman S. You were a great car. Thanks for the memories. |

Your daily drives just got longer. After 37 months I still end up driving 10-20 miles when I go on a 1-2 mile errand. She's a beauty! Enjoy.

Hello and welcome! You're gonna love this baby. I like the classic silver/red German racing colors.

Welcome.
I was on the same boat when deciding which car to get. Cayman's ride made it too hard for it to be an enjoyable daily driver. Nice switch and go topless as much as you can.

For me it came down to headroom - or lack thereof. I was down to cross-shopping a SL550 vs the Z4, but the Z has ~2-3 more inches of headroom. After going over a bump and hitting my head in the MB - it was an easy decision.... Except for a 911 - the rest are made for shorter people (I'm 6-4).... I have room to wear a helmet as well in the Z |

I'm relatively new here, but also came from a 2007 Cayman S to an 09 Z4.
The Cayman was great at a track weekend, but just didn't provided the daily enjoyment of the Z4. Welcome to the forum! |

Welcome to the club !
When I was looking for my car, I had considered a Cayman, but couldn't find one to test drive, and I certainly wasn't going to order one without sampling the merchandise first. I was concerned about the ride quality, since I had ridden in a friend's Boxster, and thought it was a rough ride on our secondary roads. Got the Z4, and have been very pleased ever since ! You will enjoy it ! |

Thanks for the kind welcomes everyone!
I've only had the car for a couple days, but am really loving it. Last night was the first time in three years that the wife and I went out for a drive just for fun. 75-degrees, top down cruise around the lake. That's something we would never have done in the Cayman. I can definitely see how the Z4 will be a more fun every day car than the Porsche. Oh, and like the rest of you, I am addicted to the exhaust sound on this thing. I keep finding myself putting the car in neutral at lights just to lightly rev the engine and listen to the exhaust. lol |

Welcome to the Z Club. Great choice.
I made the same decision. After driving many examples of 35i 's for sale from around all of New England, the dealer where I got my 09 35i from had a beautiful, white, manual, low mileage, 08 Cayman S in my price range sitting right next to the Z. After visually admiring both and driving both, the decision was made while re-test driving the DCT Z with the top down, even with the RFT tires, that are a harsher ride, the E89 was the hands down winner. I knew I was rarely, if ever, going to track any car and as already well stated, the lackluster Cayman interior and bone jarring ride made, plus the rare Z sighting made my decision even easier. I love the Z with the DCT in Sport +, high reving cracking exhaust with the top down rides to no where in particular. Just what I bought it for.

welcome OP.
Looks like BMW was right on to market the Z4 using "Joy" and not "Ultimate Driving Machine" since people are giving up mid engined excellence to get the styling and removable roof. |

As a daily driver, the hard top was a big part of the equation, as originally I was cross-shopping a 911 conv and a corvette. Knowing that I would have to drive in the rain - and the top would likely be up ~25-40% of the time made it easier

I've said it before elsewhere but I'll say it again here.
If you're not looking for a car that handles on rails and 99.9% of your driving is on the road, the E89 is better than any other 'verts out there this side of the new SL.
