z4 front bumper side spacing gaps
Hi All,
I just notice my M-Sport bumper has a larger space gap on the right side comparing to left side. Does anyone else has this same symptom with their bumpers. I have attached a picture of the right bumper space gap and a left one. You can tell that the right has a larger gap! Not sure if this normal as the car is custom built and not used! |

I had that with my rear bumper which caused the trunk/boot to scrape on it when lowering the roof! Clearly they're no better at aligning the bumpers now than they were in 2009!

Not noticed any significant differences, but now you've mentioned it I'll be having a closer look later on. Both bumpers are coming off soon for a respray, so I'll make sure they go back on properly aligned.

I had my front bumper remounted due to this. it was so badly aligned i actually thought my hood is bent to the right. The remount makes it much better but still not perfect. I have more of an issue with the fender to hood gap, front bumper gap i was able to fix but the fender gap not so much.
disappointed by the dealers, they didn't do anything and they suggested that some one might have bumped into the car and it's a bodyshop job, not theirs.

That is not cool, was it brand new when you got the car. If it is, then it's really bad; they should fix it. At least might is not all that noticeable and I can bear with it. Just annoying knowing that I custom ordered it and it's not perfect with the a price not cheap for a car. Mind taking pics of your space gaps so I can see

i rather not because they body might scratch the car here and there. I would bring it back to BMW, but at this point, I might just bear with it. Just that it suck to pay this much and see a little imperfection

Too minor to matter. A hood to fender gap difference from left to right side is visable at the same time and irritating, but not your gap. I'm more confused why your car is two different colors. kidding.

z4z4z4, it is not two different colors! it is the camera angle when i took the pic where the garage light was right above the hood , so that part look lighter

Looks like the fellow on one side had the correct plastic feeler gauge when the fender was installed toe fellow on the other side may need a set of new glasses for he may have used the wrong plastic feeler gauge size when he checked the spacing prior to tightening the fender. If you ever made a factory tour you may have seen the fellows using the plastic feeler gages during the final assembly of various body parts, fenders etc.

Had this on my car and did some adjustments of the bumper just a few bolts, but the hardest are the corner bolts so did not bother and just did the best with what I had available. Actually it is very easy.!!
Also it is very easy to adjust the hood closer height which also closes the gap somewhat. To get it perfect I would have needed to loosed the hood bolts (at the strut end) and move the hood front to back but this WAS too big a job for such little return. Remember the gap will alter anyway due to the movement of the chassis and the bonnet has movement albeit small. My intent was to stop crap getting into the engine bay as the car drives forward and ensure all the seals were playing their part!!!!!! while I was at this I torqued all of the bolts around the engine/struts and whatever else I could reach with my torque wrench without dismantling anything. I was amazed at how many bolts required 1/4 or 1/2 or full turns. When I finished the car actually felt very tight, probably all in my head!!!!!! |

The bolts I torqued where strut bolts and torsion struts, as there is no manual for the E89 available, I researched my old 6 Series and the TIS for the latest models i.e the 3 Series which the car is based on, I found lots of commonality on the spec and kept within +/- 'x' newtons to ensure I was not over stressing and common sense one click of the torque wrench (hope the last bit made sense). Sadly cannot remember the values I used as I did this nearly a year ago!!!!!
All other chassis panel bolts I did with common sense, mostly sensing movement and again repeat common sense...... The biggest risk is actually in bolts being under torqued, there is a fault were the torsion struts between the fire wall and the suspension struts being slightly loose (after 'x' K miles ) and when I had the grills off I checked the front ones. Any bolts which are for holding items in place I just checked that they were tight, to stop stuff rattling or vibrating. I then covered every bolt with ACF 50 to keep clean and non-tarnished. The bumper panel mentioned in this thread has all the torqx bolts on the top and then on each corner there are two 10mm nuts but hard to play around with so I left them. I was able to really get a good gap between the panel and the front line of the bonnet/hood. As for the hood closing height I put copper grease on the stops and judged how hard the bonnet had rested on them (not the best of explanations but it worked) also checked the gap to the headlights.
