What happened to the Z's
Since I just bought my 2012 Z4 today, I would like to hear some comments from those on here in the know. Are you waiting for the Z2 or Z3 like I was.

Personally I am not sure why the Z4 does not sell better. I think the 35is is selling better than some of the none is models... at least that is what my dealership is telling me. I guess a lot of people out there are like me... I want to use my Z4 as a track car, I want it to go fast, handle great and stop on a dime. Although the stock Z4 35is is very quick (Car and Driver clocked it 0-60 in 4.4), my friend has a ESS tuned one and he is clocking 0-60 in the 3.4 range. I have that on order for my car as well... but that said, mine was 74k.. and that is rather expensive when you can get a (slower) 911 for the same price... or a loaded Cayman (one of the only cars that look the same going backward and forward :-) for the same price.....

I drove my former Z4 35i last year from Eastern Canada all the way to the west coast and back I saw only a handful of Z4's as well and some Z3's one Z8 at a dealer. I must say when I did see them I saw them on weekends during my 3 week road trip.
I think the general consensus (if you ask around) is that the Zx' is a car not for everyone also quite a few people have a Zx' as a toy (weekend toy). Some people of course use them as DD or even as a track car. So don't worry ... the Zx' is a wonderful car and having not so many on the road makes it a unique and valuable car. Someone in the Z4 forum once posted statistics of how many Z4' were sold in North America ... if you compare the numbers to other BMW's then one can appreciate just how unique the Z4' is. So be happy you are driving a real great car

I went back to an M3 since it is the more practical car for me. Also because I owned one before the Z4's. Even after I went back to the M3 I was looking for a Z4M (used) as a weekend toy. Then changed my mind and ordered a brand new M3 2012 instead. One can only drive one car at a time and not all of us have the money like Jay Leno As for other BMW drivers disregarding (as you say) the Z4's I think it is the opposite, I always got good vib's. and reactions from other BMW drivers when I drove my Z4's I think most wish they could drive one only there requirements (family and children etc.) just does not allow it to be so. So never think that ... you are driving a great car. Happy trails always

Few Z4's
Here in Los Angeles I see a few, but not as common as Boxsters or SLKs or TTs...and I like the exclusivity. The Z4 sells about 150/month in the USA per BMW on average and that is close to the other cars. 2 seat cars are just not that practical and alot of nice 4 seat convertibles currently. Personally I never want to drive cars with a back seat!
People always stop me and ask about my Z4. Being the M-Sport 3.5 model it gets a lot of attention with the special visual features. Jim/Glendale CA 2011 Z4 3.5M-Sport Ferrari 360 Modena Lotus Elise Sport 2011 BMW X3 |

1) Exclusivity - Who wants to see everyone else driving your car. 2) Resale Value - the less Z4 owners there are the lower the supply of used Z4s on the market at any one time, and that is better for resale value. Simple economics. Last edited by 35iDriver; 01-06-2012 at 01:25 PM.. |

Few Z4
Totally Agree! We are lucky, especially with all the Camrys and Minivans on the road! That's why I stopped driving Porsches and Corvettes, they are much too common.

I love that I have not seen one "new" model Z4 on the road in my local area of Columbia, SC since I bought mine last October. Makes it unique. Everyone who sees it loves it (friends, family). Many don't fit well in it (whether too tall or wide). I think that really limits how many are sold.

I ordered my new 2012 Z4 28i last Tuesday in order to get the year end discount. Turned in my 2009 Corvette trade-in on Thursday. Price may also play a part in the low sales volume of the Z4 in North America. The sales manager at the BMW dealer told me there wasn't much of a market for Corvettes in Denver in Janurary. Likewise on the Z4 is what I told him. He agreed and we proceeded with the sale. If I recall, I saw someplace in print where BMW has only sold something like 2900 Z4's to date at the end of November. I was really interested in the Z2 or Z3 that is in the future. How far into the future we don't so, so we bought what they had in their basket today.

The bottom line for US Z4 sales was 3479. Versus 3804 the year before and 3900 6 Series sales and 6100 X6 for '11.
I do like the exclusivity. I've only seen a few others around Charlotte.

Can you point out for us specifically where that was said in this thread, (or on the Internet at all) other than when you said it in your Post #7? Last edited by 35iDriver; 01-08-2012 at 09:33 PM.. |

from what i see to hear its just not a very "practical" vehicle, with the high price and not much cabin room... that being said i love my 2011 35i black on black, every time im at a light and someone is next to me you can always see someone pointing at my car talking about it. also i seem to noticed more people get out of my way when i approach them from behind, in my old 335 no one would ever move but for some reason people just get out of my way, i love it!
