I go to a Minute Lube and the guy who runs the place has a bunch of young (20 somethings) guys working there. These guys are all car nuts and they know almost as much about my car as I do. They let me go in the pit and watch them work. The oil change is supposed to be done in 15 minutes but I'm usually there about 45 minutes talking cars.....
I think making a broad statement that you should never do something because one guy had a bad experience is a bit reactionary. The guy with the Audi had a shit experience, it happens, I've had shit experiences at dealerships, lot of them but that doesn't mean that all dealerships are bad.
Find a mechanic you trust and use him. I take a case of beer into my mechanic for him and his guys on occasion, I trust them and they treat me well.
