I've been told from an BMW specialist, that the no.1 reason for oil spill on a N54 engine, is a bad PCV valve. This creates a higher pressure in the top of the engine, leading to valve cover gasket failure. Sadly many owners just replace the gasket, which will fail soon again.
So very important: Change the PSV valve AND the gasket. You can even by an upgraded breather valve, the won't fail.
