Wht makes this so stupid is that BMW has been down this road before, and not too long ago. The Z3 was supposed to be their Miata competitor, and was caught in a Catch-22 - it was too expensive to attract Miata buyers and too slow to woo Boxster buyers. BMW added the 6-cylinder engines as quickly as possible.

Nothing has changed since then. The Z2 can't compete with the Miata and Solstice market unless it's close to their price range, and there's no way it will be that cheap. The Z4 will bump up inprice like the 3-series did, the Z2 will cost as much as the Z4 Mk1 the way the 1-series costs what the E46s did, and once again you've got a car that overpriced and underpowered.
