I drove a VW GTI back to back with the R32. No comparison IMHO. While the Turbo 4 is fast off the line, it does not have the smooth, turbine like power of the NA 6 cylinder. As far as mileage, I can get 30 mpg with my Z4 cruising at 60-65. The R32 revs higher in 6th gear so mileage is lower, about 25-26 at 60 mph.

There is no smoother engine than an I6 and I sure hope BMW never abandons this configuration.
