My adult twins now 20 and 14 year old son is/was raised sorta free range, so far so good
IMO, Free-range encourages problem-solving skills, promotes creativity, strengthens personality, and builds confidence. If they messed up I think they will learn from it on their own, a whooping isn't going to help much.
I do not like rules so much but I do have some, I told my boy never to disrespect girls, treat them how you would want a guy to treat your sisters, it's that simple.

The Golden Rule. I was lucky with my kids and didn't really have many disciplinary issues, although my youngest got his ass warmed a couple of times.
