Exactly the right question. I have a Canadian spec Z4, and if the check engine symbol OP is talking about looks like a car lifted on a hoist, then indeed our Z4's failing battery caused this symbol to appear on the dash. It would initially come up when the battery did not have enough charge, during colder days, and driving the car for 30-40 kms would clear the fault symbol. Eventually, the battery failed, and once it was replaced, the symbol did not re-appear.
