Any high end running shoe will have far more cushioning than a cross trainer, especially in the heel. Think about the pounding that running a marathon does to a heal compared to what a cross trainer is dealing with. Shoe matters more than the insole, even aftermarket.

I also wear Asics (run 1/2 and full marathons) but don't think they have necessarily the best cushioning. I think reality is the "high cushioning" you need will come in most high level running shoes. Also, don't get to the store and decide you want a cheap shoe to save $25.

I strongly recommend the running store. They should evaluate you walking, hear your heal problems and have some good recommendations. I am completely against getting expert advice from them and then going to Dick's and saving $10.
