IMO he should have been banned for life. Period. It was a move designed to do nothing but harm someone and it succeeded, and for that he should have been removed from the game.

You want to protect your captain, give a good hard check or two. Play within the rules, even if the other guy didn't.

What he did was inexcusable, regardless of who he did it to.

He sucker punched him unconscious, grabbed his head and drove him face first into the ice. How can you POSSIBLY excuse an action like that?

Oh and I thought that said hit was far worse than the McSoreley hit, but equally inexcusable. Both were thug moves designed to do nothing but intentionally, permanently harm a player outside of the rules of the game.
