I'm not sure I buy this story, if the relay has enough contact areas / proper rating they should last nearly forever.
If they can't handle the load, I'd go for a better relay or do something about the motor start surge rather than simply replacing under rated relays for a fresh set of under rated relays.
Does anyone have specification on the relays and the actual starting current on the motor?
I have seen faulty motors kill relays. So cause and affect need to be established.
